It is just under the system the Leafs are using right now. It doesn't matter who is in net, the result will be the same.
I don't agree with that at all. The Leafs "system" hasn't changed in the last year yet, Reimer has a fantastic record. It totally matters who's in net for these guys. Teams play differently depending who's in net.
Reimer's record in the NHL....
43gp 24w 10L 6OT 2.59GAA .920 SV%\
This team would still probably be flying if Reimer didn't get hurt.
Again, I used Minnesota as an example. Without good goaltending their whole team would be shot. They aren't a strong defensive team anymore and they have less goals for than the Leafs and also have bad special teams percentages, but Josh Harding and Nicklas Backstrom are stepping up and winning them games.
This is a classic chicken-egg conundrum, but with an all star goaltender in their prime, like Pekka Rinne, Lundqvist, Backstrom then our numbers on the PK should improve. You also don't need to have a top 10 PP to get the job done necessarily: Chicago, Minnesota, Detroit and Nashville are all below us in PP% but have a better pts%.
At the same time both Detroit and Minnesota have very bad PK%. There's nothing wrong with a team outplaying their competition 5-on-5 and winning that way. While we need our special teams to improve, they won't destroy the team unless both stats are in the basement.
I think it's extremely disingenuous to say that RW is the only coach in the league that doesn't know how systems work, or is playing his team with wonky systems and that other coaches are geniuses in comparison. I wouldn't say that about a rookie coach in Minnesota for a second, and it's not like Babcock forgot how to coach special teams (hey, he's still winning!) I think we're not where we want to be and we've demonized him in order to justify our anger.
The main thread that all above teams have is superb goaltending. Like Wilson said earlier, you can't do much when your goaltenders are letting in non-scoring chances, and when their SV% are in the toilet, not because of "systems" but because of poor play and bad reads. The reason we were able to get back into the game last night was precisely because Scrivens didn't let in another stoppable puck and was able to settle down - and sometimes you need that from a goaltender.
I think some people here make it sound like goaltenders are victims of misfortune. That really takes the onus away from them and really denies how important the position really is.
