Goaltending Showdown - Reimer vs. Bernier

I cant help but laugh my ass off at the bad marketing potential of that Bernier Lasik ad now....

i struggle when comparing the two. i believe Bernier has the superior skills and technique. reimer seems more focused in game and is more competitive. bernier has that raycroftian twitch that is always going to hurt. hes not the goalie for a trapping style defensive minded team because hes going to give atleast one per game

The issues I see are that A) Bernier doesn't seem like he's cut out to be a 60+ start a season goalie, while B) Reimer is a guy that needs to start a lot of games to be at his best. That's kind of left the Leafs in a tough situation. They need a back up goalie who they can rely on for 25 or so starts a season, but the backup goalie they have needs more consistent work than that to be at his best. They could both also be guys that need to see a lot shots, but, we haven't seen enough of them without the high shot totals to really draw much of a conclusion there. To get the best out of their current goalies, Reimer probably needs to start a game a week (or, one of every 3 or 4 games) and Bernier needs to be rested more rather than pushed for 6+ consecutive starts.

Every time I see that jersey, all I can think of is this (a truly awful hockey decision on someone's part):

I hate to say it, but usually when a goalie gives up a goal like that, they aren't right afterwards.  Cloutier, Toskala, Potivin, and Salo all come to mind.

Most of those goalies weren't really right even before a goal like that though.

I'd say 50/50

I said most. Was specifically referring to Cloutier, Salo, and of course Toskala.

Most goalies who play professionally for long enough give up some really embarrass goals. The overwhelming majority of them brush them off. We really only remember the ones that don't.

Brodeur was so shaken up by his that he retired!  ;D

I guess it comes down to Bernier's demeanour as to how this will affect his career.  Hasn't really been a banner year for Jonathan on or off the ice.  Every goalie is different in the end.

Roy had that embarrassing goal where he dropped the puck in the net from his glove but that was near the end of his career.

Broduer let in a goal from centre ice this year.  I believe that is the only time he had that happen.

Marc-Andre Fluery had that goal in the gold medal game.  He

A quick search of Quick, Rask and Price didn't turn up anything.

Must have been a really quick search. Quick had one last season where he went out to play a puck shot in from the other end and it ended up in the net. Rask had one in the playoffs (I think) a couple seasons ago.

Since they are pretty much a wash and since we are losing almost a maximum number of games either way, why pay exponentially for Bernier. After all, it is clear that he is not a difference maker in any respect and yet - like Franson - he will expect $5M+ over four to five years.

Not worth it.

I like Bernier as a goalie and I do not blame him in the least.

The fact remains that the job is not getting done with this crew - in this regard it is not getting done at all, there is no silver lining - and rather than overpay for average (at best) players on contracts we will regret, cut our loses, and just stick with the low cost alternative during what OBVIOUSLY has to be the long overdue 6 years too late rebuild.

@b1rky

Here are some weird numbers for Jonathan Bernier: in 47 home games, he has a pedestrian .913 sv%.  On the road, it's much better at .927.

However, he seems to be a first half performer. First 3 months (last season): .930  Last 3 months (last season): .915  First 3 months (this yr): .921  Second half (this yr, so far): .892.
