Grabovski - Under the Watchful Eye Of An Angel

no chance Grabovski will be moved:

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=388973

Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke gave a vote of confidence to Mikhail Grabovski, saying there is "no chance" the club will trade the centre before today's deadline.

Burke told TSN that progress is being made in contract negotiations with the 27-year-old Belarusian.

Sinking feeling in my stomach that we'll get nothing for him, maybe a 6th for his negotiating rights prior to July 1st.  Either that or we'll pay him in excess of five million and that's something I don't think I'm comfortable with.

I'm OK with that ... if they can sign him of course.

Yep. If they lose him for nothing ...  :(

I imagine Burke feels very strongly that he will sign. Why go to the unknown for the Belarusian? His time in to I think has been positive after Mtl, and he has a small fam with a to girl. I doubt that Grabo will be like McCabe before he became a Ufa, or that Burke would panick like JFJ did...

I did a PVR rewind when Burke replied to how sure they were to getting Grabbo signed. He said they were pretty confident they could, then he backed tracked and said, "well, not confident but....."

Oh jeez. I remember him saying it wasn't the amt per yr but the length...purely speculating I bet he offered a 4 -5 deal and Grabo wanted 6-7. He is probably worth 5 mil next yr, but he plays a pretty physical game. It would suck if he had bad knees and lost his speed, and still got paid 5 mil after losing his effectiveness.

In the post deadline PC he said they had talks and that it wasn't a 'done deal but we're pretty comfortable we're going to be able to sign him'... before the year is over.

Which I'm very happy about if that is accurate.

I think it gets done. Grabbo probably told him that he wants to be here bad enough to take a year or two off the deal, I'm assuming. That will be good news.

Burke can then concentrate on finding a new home for Connolly.

I hope it works out because the UFA market for centers doesn't look very good.

UFA market for goalies looks interesting. And there's some dmen who could help a team (Suter being the cream of the crop) and some wingers like Parise & Semin.

Re-signing Grabbo is pretty important if they want to compete next season and don't want to pay for a center with a bunch of prospects.

I'm prepared for a deal that might be a little ugly.

Sounds like you like Grabbo a lot!  Finally!

So... is Semin the cream of the crop of wingers?

I'm thinking he comes in around 4.8 over 3 years, Burke has appeared to be pretty good with re-signings. Also, if Burke wasn't confident about what he said, I'm sure he would have traded the kid. Have we let a player walk yet under Burke?
