Ilya Mikheyev extends with the Leafs | 2 years 1.645AAV

After you spend most of your cap dollars on the Big Four, defence and goaltending, I'm sure the negotiating becomes a little more stream-lined. Like, "Here's what we have left, we're literally physically cap unable to do that. But this a great place to play, with great players and a competent head-office. We'd love for you to be here. Here's what we CAN do."

Along with Hyman, Mikheyev has an important job here, I'm glad he's back. Anyone that provides more diverse traits than the elite, skill guys is someone you definitely want. Defensive IQ, forechecking tenacity, penalty killing and still having a decent finish. That Mikheyev and Hyman are still here but the more expensive and skilled Johnsson, Kapanen and Brown have gone is telling. Bigger and/or harder to play against in both ends of the ice has been the order of the day for this off-season and I totally agree with it.

I can't imagine there's anyone UFA for the same money with the same potential.

If he's healthy and plays all season you're 100% right. I think we're in the phase of the Leafs that the non-core players now will be slightly underpaid. Spezza could've gotten a raise. Thornton at league-min. Vesey and Simmonds' deals and now Mik at $1.65-million. The trade-off of course is you have great players to play with and a chance to win the Stanley Cup. A lot of teams don't have that.

Hopefully Hyman also takes a hometown discount, when he's a Free Agent next season.

If Josh Anderson is worth 5.5...the most discount you're asking from Hyman is 5M. If he scores 20+ again,  all bets are off

If Hyman wants 5, he'll be gone.

Excellent deal for us. I like Mikheyev and the way he plays. Think he was a good find by Dubas and will only get better. Injury set him back which helped regarding the signing but another piece signed. Get Dermott inked and we are good to go.

?Ilya decided to step off a little bit from an already agreed number to help the team fit under the cap,? Mikheyev?s agent, Dan Milstein, told Sportsnet after tweeting news of the signing.

?For Ilya, it was less about the money, but more about the role in the organization. He wishes to win the Stanley Cup. It's been a lifelong dream.?

[...]

According to Milstein, the sides had initially agreed to a cap hit slightly higher than $1.645 million.

The agent was on the phone explaining the bridge deal?s terms to Mikheyev when the Maple Leafs quickly called back requesting the forward take slightly less so they could be cap [compliant] for 2021?s opening night.

I take it to mean they have a deal in place for Dermott.

Also, I'm guessing the original deal was 1.65M AAV (1.1M + 2.2M, which is the maximum yearly increase, and includes his sweater number). That's a razor thin cut off the cap (15k).

How do you know how close to the cap they are (15k) if you don?t know what Dermott?s deal is?  (Who are you including on your roster?) I must be missing something...

To be clear, I know nothing unpublished.

The Leafs agreeing to a term, and then coming back later to ask for a bit of a trim tells me something in their cap model changed during the course of that agreement. Also, Mikheyev's AAV is soooooo close to his jersey number, you have to wonder why they didn't just do it. On top of the backloaded salary structure being juuust not maximized is strange.

Milstein outlined later to Mirtle (or all the press, who knows) that Mikheyev was being wooed by Omsk and could have made several times this deal easily back home.
?But we worked together (with the Leafs). There were concessions on both sides. But to Ilya, it was very important that nobody else got traded (to accommodate his salary) and that the team was able to come in on opening night with a complete roster. He gave a little concession. But he feels very good about the team and his role on the team.?

The only cap situation change that would be relevant to the opening day roster compliance is an important player that hasn't been signed yet (Travis Dermott).

The Leafs are clearly gearing up their roster for the eventuality of adjusted roster rules similar to the bubble. They are privy to NHL and AHL return to play discussions; the NHL will be a compressed schedule regardless of when it starts in 2021 and the AHL looks highly unlikely to operate without fans. That leaves NHL teams with a crippled CHL, some ECHL, some NCAA(?), and overseas as options for their non-roster contracts.

I think if the Leafs do win a cup in 21 that you won't see Jumbo, Spezza, Simmons or perhaps Bogosian back for 22. There here for the Cup and working cheap.

The big meeting is Friday for the NHL and AHL and all that stuff. They have a lot hurdles to overcome especially if there is no other leagues operating.
