Not really, no. Not unless the arbitrator rules in their favour. If not, he has to remain on the NHL roster - though, obviously, on LTIR - until he's cleared to play, at which time, the Leafs can send him to the AHL for the remainder of the season to save a little cap space.

Why can't they put him on waivers during the season for purpose of a buyout?

There are only 2 buyout windows, both are in the off-season.

TBLeafer said:Right, in season you can put someone on unconditional waivers for the purposes of terminating a contract.

Only in very specific circumstances - typically only when a player has an offer to play in a European league rather than the AHL, or if the player has violated the terms of his contract.
