Joffrey Lupul

jonasTSN1050: Carlyle says Lupul went through more tests this afternoon and was fine. Did report some stiffness in neck. Hopes to skate tomorrow.

I'm glad he is coming back so quick, but I just dropped him from my fantasy team because I thought there was no way he would be back!

Carlyle says Lupul is day to day and won't call the injury concussion.

Called the stalling last night.

It's just a matter of time before we hear about his 'concussion-like symptoms' which are not a concussion.

Carlyle said he went for an evaluation this morning, didn't sound like he had the results.

Do you want him to call it a concussion before he knows its a concussion?

Pff who needs evaluation, or a medical license, to diagnose a concussion?

As someone who is pretty darn close to having one, it's not that hard to diagnose...

But Carlyle doesn't have one (although the line combinations do call that into question).  That would be like me saying you have a concussion just by looking at you.  I'm sure you could do it and be right sometimes, but I would be going for the doctor's opinion if it were me.

The thing about concussion diagnosis is that it's a pretty soft one.  It's not a lab test so it is pretty subjective.

There are two major classifications in terms of head injuries:
Mild Traumatic Brain Injury - this one would be more along the lines of Sami Kapanen/the guys who are actually unconscious on the ice after a hit.  The impairment has to last at least 30 minutes after the initial impact for it to be classified in this way

Concussion - is really just a head injury (or upper body injury to be complete) with a short duration of impairment.  That impairment is any one of:
Blank staring, delayed verbal response to questions, poor concentration, disorientation, slurred speech, poor coordination, any loss of consciousness, and a few others.

If Lupul had any of those in the dressing room after the hit, by definition, he had a concussion.

The thing that muddies the water in terms of how to discuss it is that there still aren't good guidelines for how to appropriately handle concussion recovery.  Return to play is one of the strategies that has been implemented but even that is based on pseudo-evidence and is more precautionary hope that it will help rather than great evidence that it is the best way to handle concussions. Some of the symptoms can be extremely short lived and you don't need to have one of the post-concussive syndromes to have a concussion.  So you can have a concussion and still not have to deal with the days of dizziness, blurred vision, photophobia, etc.

That's more what I was getting at with Carlyle dancing around the word concussion.  He either had one or he didn't.  The real question was in whether he was still symptomatic or not.  It appears that things have checked out ok on that front, so it is encouraging.

It's nice that Dr. Carlyle gave us a good update but I won't believe anything (specially if its coming from Carlyles mouth) until I see it with my own eyes!

When Lupul skates for a full practice and then comes out for another practice/skate the next day, then ill look forward to his return.

Carlyle has shown that he's a terrible judge of injuries....either that or he flat out lies to the media...

Ummm..okay, Carlyle...that's an interesting theory you've got there...

@jonasTSN1050: Joffrey Lupul has taken to the ice this morning. Will see if he sticks around for practice. Definitely a positive sign.

Maybe his neck is too stiff or maybe he just wanted to go for a skate to see how he felt.  He may feel fine.  This is likely my wishful thinking though.

jonasTSN1050: In all, Lupul was on the ice for about 20 minutes.

It's an encouraging sign, but, on it's own, it doesn't mean much. If he's back on the ice again tomorrow, it probably means he's close to returning. If he's not, then, who knows.
