Real_ESPNLeBrun: The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed Mike Komisarek on waivers

He must have requested it, otherwise, this wouldn't be possible.

DarrenDreger: Komisarek has waived no-move clause. He will report if claimed. If not willl report to Marlies.

If he's okay with playing with the Marlies, I am too...but he best not get injured. :S

Even if he does get hurt, he can get bought out as long as he gives consent. Considering the situation - one season left on contract, not getting playing time, etc - I can't imagine he'd refuse unless the injury kept him out for the entire season, in which case, the Leafs would just stash him on LTIR.

Compliance buyouts pay the player in full, so there isn't even a financial incentive to not accept the buyout.

If he gets injured, we can't amnesty him, no... but his cap hit wouldn't count either, right? - like Savard.

If he gives his consent, he can still be bought out with a compliance buy-out. Unless he actually can't play for the entire season, there's no reason for him to refuse.

I'm still a little bummed we never gave him one more chance. Sure, he was pretty bad as a Leaf, but I still think he was unfairly benched this time around

Right. So either way, Komi is a non-issue next year.

As long as he isn't really teaching him how to play defence, Komisarek could be a very positive influence for Rielly when he joins the team.

You do have a point.

There is at least some similarity to the refusal (until yesterday) to call up Gardiner, namely it seems that once an opinion is formed as to a player's ability and role with the Leafs, that is it.

Having said that, the fact is that we are soon to be awash in good young defencemen who will have to be assessed and placed in progressively responsible roles within the organization. Reilly, Finn and Blacker being the prominent ones but there are others and we have been parking two extras in pressbox as it is.

At some point a decision has tobe made as to the short term goal of crawling into the playoffs this year vs a longer term one of buidling a sustainably competitive team.  Based on the Nonis comments yesterday on trade deadline possibilities, I would say that he favours the long term goal over 2013 (sure he wants both if he can get thembut in a contest 2013 gets sacrificed on the altar of long term respectability) and that means a strategic deployment of roster positions in some form of a building process.

This also means cleaning out those players who are not liekely to be part of the long term (and arguably not part of the short term) plan.

That would include Komisarek along with some of our duplicate 3rd and 4th line forwards, two of whom have already been moved.

The prospect of being in serious competition for a playoff spot may slow the process somewhat (conversely if this current tailspin continues, we will no doubt be moving a lot more players out on deadline day) but I sense that Nonis is genuinely committted to the rebuild that he thought Burke should have instituted almost 5 years ago.

Very noble of him and if he agreed to waive his NMC he would have suit up with the Marlies in order to collect his paycheque.  This actually makes me feel all the more sorry for him.  He realizes that this will keep him sharp, will help the Marlies or even if he puts it together down there it could make the Leafs take note for a recall.  It may also lead to another team taking note and that team may feel more comfortable acquiring him knowing that he is game ready.  All this of course is if he doesn't get pucked off waivers to begin with.  Say what you want Komi wants to play, would have been easy just to collect a cheque this short season, get bought out then sign on the cheap for additional money next season.  Good on Komisarek.

You've lost me on how it is similar.

Even if that's true, outside of playing the same position is there anything Komisarek offers in that regard that's unique? There are other good guys on the team.

Good on Komisarek.  He's not sulking, not speaking out in the press and has accepted a demotion (if nobody claims him).  He just wants to play.

Nice! I may have actually been right about Komisarek having played his last game as a Leaf.

One of the classiest guys on the team. Too bad he's awful at playing hockey.
