Komisarek

I think at this point he would be open to a trade to just about anywhere but Nonis would have to keep/take some salary. Mike is heading for a buyout.

As a 9th D on the Leafs I guess they would have to retain 90% of his salary

If I'm Komisarek though, I almost ask to be sent to the Marlies - you still get your salary, and it has to be better than not playing at all, wouldn't it?  Every game he spends in the press box decreases his value, especially is he does get bought out and becomes a UFA.  At least if you're playing, even if it's in the AHL, you show that you can still be a contributor...

I can't see that as something that increases his trade value.  I also can't see that as something that the Leafs or Komi would want.

From the Leafs perspective, you have your 7th dman a guy that has no future with the team in the press box and you don't necessarily worry about him not playing like you would if a kid were there.  You also don't want him taking a spot away on the Marlies from a kid who you want down there playing and developing.

From Komi's perspective, he is getting paid not to play so why risk being injured down on the farm when you are anticipating signing on with a team after he is bought out this summer.  Not to mention the horrible experience as far as travel goes when your used to the NHL life and the definite blow to the ego.

I think they are keeping him as injury reserve.  Is some dmen get injured then he is right there waiting to slot in.  He will be bought out in the summer.  He might be traded at the deadline if a team wants him.  He could also be waived if there was a taker.

One thing as far as injury goes, isn't it true that the compliance buyouts can't be used on an injured player?  That might explain why they keep him firmly planted in the press box (besides the fact that the young guys are better), but doesn't explain why they didn't use the accelerated aka 'Gomez buyout' to get rid of him right away.  Maybe they wish they had...

I suspect they may have bought him out they had any inkling that Kostka, Fraser, and Holzer were all going to pass him on the depth chart.

Agreed. This was a matter of not knowing quite what we had. He hasn't been bad in the 4 games he got into - but we have seen impressive things from all three of those guys that you are just not going to get with Komi.

If we bought him out during the buyout period before this season, that would have made a lot of sense because he would have still had two contract seasons to go then. I'm all for buying him out this summer, but it really sucks that we would have to pay him past a year because of it, never mind that it would be at a lesser rate.
