A smarter strategy would have been to peg the Tavares contract as the the maximum contract with other players having to line up under that amount. Dubas did not do so with Matthews, he overpaid Nylander and now faces the same problem with Marner.

This, of course, is true. It would have been much smarter if Dubas had gone with the very very smart and well considered strategy of...paying players less than they want.

I guess you forgot that Lou did exactly that with Brodeur being the top contract in NJ and the Bruins did it with Bourque contract.  I guess you think they are the amateurs.
Lou also was a shit GM for years. Kovy contract anyone??

Every GM has that one move that turns the fan base against him. I haven?t seen anything from Dubas that comes remotely close to that.

I think if he traded Nylander out of pettiness I?d be singing a different tune.

I am super curious to see how our D works out because I think it?s shaping up terribly. I hope I am wrong or he makes another move.

So far, other than netting Tavares (over some big ticket GMs with decades more experience), he has cleaned up any bad blood with Carrick and Leivo and Corrado from their career-limiting pressboxing, wiped out bad cap term and hits of Marleau and Zaitsev for the cost of a 1st and Brown (who was himself a cap savings option).

Now it appears Dubas isn't too sure Ceci fits in the Leafs top 4. Zaitsev did.

If someone doesn't like the Zaitsev deal, fair enough. Maybe they like him better than most of us or feel like if you're going to pay Ceci anyway then you might want to try and move him next year instead(despite him being unhappy in his role) whatever.

The idea that you're going to be upset about the Marleau deal seems predicated on the idea that if Dubas had just negotiated harder he could have gotten a better deal when his hands were tied to a ludicrous extent by Marleau's NMC and other teams having to be willing to buy him out. Doubt Dubas all you want on his player decisions but to believe that he made the deal he did when a better one was out there on Marleau is just, well, it's a word I get in trouble when I say.

Why would any person care about MLSE paying Zaitsev's signing bonus?

And yes, that's what I'm pulling out of that post. Others can take care of the other parts.  [emoji14]
Only because the whole reason for getting rid of Zaitsev was his contract - yes, Zaitsev wanted out but frankly that's his problem -- and paying $3M undermines that purpose.

I don't understand what you're saying.  Paying the signing bonus is what facilitated the trade, aka "getting rid of the contract"; it didn't undermine it. This payment has zero impact on the Leafs' cap space. It's an example of the GM using his available resources to rid the team of a bad contract signed by his predecessor. While I'm not as down on Zaitsev as others, this move should be praised to some level.

It was a great move!!! That enough praise? lol

Well, a bit much. Mild praise would be acceptable. A good, solid "meh" with a slight nodding be sufficient

There is no one who matches JFJ.  He was freakin' awful.  Horrible.  As soon as that Rask/Raycroft trade was made, I cursed the guy like no other.  Still do to this day.

I'm not the biggest Dubas fan and I don't think his poop smells like roses as it's made out to be, but come on...JFJ 2.0?!

I'm not entirely sure that how Boston handled things 20 years ago is particularly relevant but, regardless, I don't want the Leafs to end up like the Bourque-era Bruins.

Dubas' record in the playoffs as GM is 3-4.

Well that is faint praise indeed.

It's just the truth.

Dubas is a f__king genius, the boy wonder.. Shanahan spotted a great brain and got rid of the old school guys.
Yup. It's been a very busy off season for Dubas and I think he's done a great job.
