Leafs acquire Foligno

Like I know that you can?t make your moves only based on opponents but looking at Tampa right now I think I would rather have added Savard if we were giving up a first round pick.
Where's he playing on this team? Bogo sitting? Holl, Brodie? Leafs actually had better right hand D then T Bay before the Savard trade.

I think though that there?s a sentiment that this could be their easiest road to the conference finals, so may as well shoot your shot because then you?ve only got 2 more teams to worry about.

I get that but like I said I think that's a double edged sword. Yeah, it's probably an easier road out of the division than in any other year but it also may be a year where you're more in the dark about how they stack up against the other real contenders.

I don?t disagree but I also don?t understand why the leafs can?t consider themselves real contenders.

I don't think anyone is objecting to the idea of trading 1sts as a general rule. I mean, the Leafs themselves have traded their 1st in the last two years which is, you know, one of the reasons their farm is as dry as it is.

That's more an indictment on the Leafs scouting. The best player drafted outside the top 10 in the last 15 years is Connor Brown.

Foligno is not a bad addition as far as adding to a playoff run but I?m not thrilled with the cost.  We are getting 11 regular season games and a postseason run out of him.

If he helps get them to a final.  Totally worth it.

Definitely a steep price but I am absolutely on board with this, what with the uncertainty of the draft, the likelihood of this pick being a very late 1st because of the division setup and the tiny amount of salary cap retention (meaning more moves can be made, if needed).
Foligno is a high-end defensive player and penalty killer, hits everything that moves and can also play a better centre than both Engvall and Kerfoot. He fits a huge need on this team, which is pretty much now stacked to the gills with skill and depth. I'm stoked *

*If, in fact, the Leafs suffer another early exit I will deny all knowledge of this post and pretend I was a) hacked or b) being completely facetious

In almost any other year, I?d be much more upset about moving a 1st for a rental. I still don?t love it, but this year?s draft is the most unpredictable I can remember, and wasn?t expected to be a particularly strong draft to start with. I still don?t love it, but it certainly could have been worse.

Kind of a side issue but it kind of feels like a really uncertain draft is an opportunity if you have a lot of faith in your scouting/development system.

That's the way I view it.

Cons:
- bye bye first rd pick, even though you were probably destined to be converted to more 2nds; perhaps there could have been a better player to be had
- Bye bye 4th rd picks I was planning to overhype

Pros:
- defensive versatility for the top-9 that wasn?t going to come from 97, 19, 24, 47, 65, 12, 94
- an honest to goodness (_!_) who can drag folks into the mud with him; not the worst thing to run in a playoff series.
- he?s a good match up against what the playoff eligible of the North is going to try to throw at us and he has more recent experience in stopping the Lightning (CBJ couldn?t score).

Essentially they got an older, somewhat slower, meaner Hyman

11-34-16
12-91-88
71-47/29-65
97-15/47-19/24

Or fun:
88-34-16
71-91-11
97-15-19/24
12-47-65

Maybe but I think there's only so much you can do without 1sts.

A lot of the reports I'm reading have Foligno showing up as a much better defensive player than I figured. I thought he was just a grindy-grinder. He's also a regular penalty killer which will be useful especially if Engvall gets bounced from the line-up. Not sure if I'll ever love the price unless the Leafs go all the way, but I get the interest in him I guess.

I was coming in to say almost the exact same thing. I'm not sure I like the 1st, but when you're trying to get teams to keep 75% of the salary, I guess you have to pay?

Like I said in the other thread, I really like Foligno. I think he brings more than what he's being given credit for. He was the captain of the team that drove Toronto nuts in the playoffs. Is he worth the price? I don't know. But he'll be a very useful player for the team and I think people may come to like him. Can't always look at the 7 goals and say "wow, he's not really good"

I'm not overly disappointed about giving up a first especially in this years draft which is supposed to be weak but maybe a tad steep for someone like Foligno who's going to be a UFA in the summer. Dubas should trade away the remaining 3 picks we have this year and can save the whole management team from even attending the draft. 3 picks is all we have left. Sportsnet says Leafs aren't on the hook for any salary so maybe something else up Dubas' sleeve.

These guys got nothing else to do on the road especially.

Well, since everyone has vaccines on their minds these days, I interpret this as Dubas inoculating himself from criticism that he's built the team for everything but playoff success.  I see this as part 3 of some concerted moves to make the team defense playoff-capable (TJB and Bogo being parts 1 and 2).  If Foligno plays the role of Shutdown Chieftain and the d-corps plays as well as it generally has had so far this season, then he can say he addressed both sides of the puck.  The only question (Ul)mark left is the goaltending.

Riley Nash shouldn't be forgotten either since he should be available for the playoffs
