Leafs Announce Training Camp Roster

Parenteau has been brutal. I don't recall saying to myself "Wow, that guy gives away the puck more than he completes passes" in a long, long time.

Oh yeah? I really only watched him closely in the first game and he looked good, but that was mostly on the powerplay. Wouldn't be surprised if they use him as a 4th line PP specialist type then.

So, since Mark Fraser played a regular shift in the league?

Like I said, a long, long time :D

Mark Fraser was the best stick-to-knee passer in the league.

Would the Leafs management bring in another player if an interesting guy was waived ?

I guess it depends on who it is.  If it was someone like Shane Prince, then they may consider it.

The JVR-Bozak pairing might not be making it out of training camp, lines today per Jonas Siegel:

van Riemsdyk-Kadri-Winnik
Matthias-Bozak-Lupul
Komarov-Holland-Boyes

Where's Grabner?  I haven't been able to check anything out regarding the Leafs the last couple of months.

Grabner, Parenteau, Boyes have been shuffled up and down the line up during the preseason to assess their fit.

Grabner has been used as one of the primaries on PK; but has been otherwise unremarkable. Parenteau seems to be effective only on the PP (for 1 game, at that). Boyes has been, in my opinion, the best of the newer forward acquisitions. Matthias is pretty decent too.

Babcock again refusing to dismiss the kids yesterday, actually contradicted a reporter than said they are going to the Marlies, "I don't know about that, I like em"

That's gotta make them feel pretty good about their progress.

Yup, it likely doesn't change the fact that all of them will start at the Ricoh for the most part. He's probably just trying to light a fire under some of the vets I'd guess.

Anyone else a wee bit disappointed in how Marner looked in pre-season?

I know he's 18 and all, but he sure looked out of his league for a 4th overall pick.

No?  Just me?  OK then.

I don't really have much in the way of other 4th overall picks to compare his pre-season to. He didn't blow the wheels off or anything but I didn't expect him to.

He only played in 2 games, both early in training camp. Like Nik says, nobody should have really expected him to dominate or anything like that. I only watched his debut, and while there were some flashes here and there it was rather forgettable.

I'm hoping to watch some Knights games this season, will be really interesting to see if he can match or even top his scoring rate from last season.

I mean, I'd throw out that I don't have a single memory of anything in particular that William Nylander did in last year's camp before looking gangbusters in this one. I understand the implication that we should be more impressed with a #4 than a #8 pick but, again, the last time the Leafs picked as high as #4 I was six years old and they didn't broadcast the pre-season.

It's also important to remember that Marner is still very much a kid. This was his first taste of being on the ice as part of an NHL team. He almost certainly had a lot of emotional stuff going on that could have impacted his performance. Not everyone feel comfortable from day 1. I'll be more concerned if he has a bad year in London or looks bad in future pre-seasons. This year's doesn't tell me much - especially considering he knew coming in that the odds of him not being sent back to junior were basically zero.

I'm tempering my disappointment with all that stuff...I was just hoping to see a little more evidence of his superior skill set, that's all.

I wasn't disappointed per se, but it reinforced for me that Nylander is still our #1 prospect. I thought Nylander looked infinitely better last year than Marner did this.

It's early and everything others have said applies, I'm not down on Mitch at all, looking forward to seeing him tear it up this time next year.

He looked nervous more than anything, but the tools were definitely there.

Who wouldn't be, if they finally got the chance to play for the team they cheered for growing up?
