I think it just gets to a point where people are reaching for the negatives. If it wasn't for the goaltending, or the offense, or the first line, or secondary scoring, etc, etc. the team would suck.

While all that may be true, the fact is we 'have' those things.

The defense has been an issue, but really there are way more positives to take note of than negatives....

People are hardly reaching for anything. It's been the same two things going for the Leafs all season. Goaltending and the first line are the only things that have been consistently good for the Leafs. In fact, other than the PP (who has seen a lot of success largely because of the 1st line), nothing else has worked out well for the Leafs on a regular basis. Take away either of those things, and the Leafs are on the outside, looking in.

And, sure, the Leafs have those things, but, that's what middle of the pack, going nowhere teams have - a couple things that work and major deficiencies elsewhere.

Wow. So the Leafs are a middle-of-the-pack, going nowhere team? Is that what you're really saying? Must suck following this team for you.

I'd like them to make more attempts to set Phaneuf up for a one-timer on the PP.  He feasted on that early in his career and how many times this entire season have they set him up for one?  Hardly ever happens.

With the way they've played this year, yes. They've been getting elite goaltending but they're still near the bottom on the league in goals allowed. That's not a team that's going anywhere with a significant change in strategy. They're on pace to be one of the worst teams in the history of the league in terms of shots allowed. Fixing that also requires a substantial change in strategy. They are, however, having enough success to keep those in charge of the on ice strategy employed for at least one more season, so, those changes that they need to happen in order to take the next step aren't going to happen.

Not a good set of PPs. The Leafs had a lot of time but still insisted on taking low percentage perimeter shots with no traffic.

Never thought this would happen in the 2nd.

Fortunately, the Caps are almost as defensively incompetent as the Leafs and the Leafs are gaining control of the puck this period. This is really one of those games that sees the team that has the puck dominate the play for long stretches. Neither team is really able to recover mid-period.

Nonis must realize this, though.  Even if RC is back, which he will be, there's no reason Nonis can't demand that they use a different strategy on D.

You would think he would have demanded that at multiple points this season, but, well, here we are. Those demands still need a receptive ear that's capable of adaptation.
