What ever happened to dmen who would clear the front of the net.

If you watch around the league, that's not really a thing that happens so much anymore. With the way the game is called now, defencemen have to actually play defence in front of the net instead of pushing people around.

Even Polak doesn't "clear the crease" as often as people believe he does.

Strong PK work by Hyman.

Edit:

Saw this in the previous PK as well, but Brown takes some unconventional forechecking routes that causes good turnovers.

This 'fight' brought to you by trying to buy time for Enroth, whose stick knob got stuck in the net.

I know the idea was to put Martin out there on the PK, but I'm much more comfortable with Brown/Hyman/Komorov.

Nope. What he does, when he's playing well, is get in between the player and the net, and use his strength to make it difficult for opposing players to get around him without having to take an extra couple steps. Most of the time, he's just out of position, though.

Yeah, Hyman's my HM so far.  But much could change yet in this Community Theater of a game.

Soshnikov should start seeing minutes there too eventually.

Why is Gardiner the only penalty?

First guy in, started the scrum that caused the refs to blow the play dead in the middle of play. I get that. Might have been an original penalty on DSP, but if you're not calling that then I can see only taking one afterward.

We're getting swamped in even strength possession (like 33% each period).

Only Kadri's line has their heads above the water at the moment.

Our defense is ... porous.

You got that right. Not just the D though it's the whole team. I said it a couple weeks ago. Too many mistakes and yes I get it's a young team but too many giveaways. Plus too many soft players who aren't willing to take a hit to get rid of the puck or keep possession. Yes it's great to have the offensive talent and flair but if you don't play good defence most of the night it's going to bite you. I'm sure the management team will address it but until then it's going to be a struggle. Thing I find and there are a bunch of new players but last year I thought we were better in that area of the game.

You look at Carolina last night and they are kind of  a mirror image of us right now, all their best young players are on defense.

Marner oh my goodness I thought it was in.

I'd have him out there constantly in OT if it were possible.
