I like (I think it was your) suggestion to try swapping Nylander and Marner. The PP needs a solid shooting threat on both sides. Teams are going to respect Nylander's shot more.

Agreed. I mean it's one of those hypotheticals that has no basis in reality like would your trade x + y + z for McDavid? Like sure, but it's not going to happen so why are we entertaining this? I would trade Marner for an upgrade but generally a 1 to 1 trade like that won't happen. If it was for a stud D though... I think that sounds a bit more realistic but still unlikely until another couple years into the contract.

It was the same thing with Nylander. Lots of people wanted him moved for a top young defender, but no one could ever put forth a name that was was available for a trade and was good value. It?s even harder with Marner. Teams that have defencemen of that caliber just don?t trade them (outside of when they have multiple young guys of similar caliber, which is exceedingly rare).

Sorry for your loss, Highlander
Thanks Herman, my Mom was old, it was expected, but I was estranged from my friend for many years because of his wife. I was going to reach out to him and let him know about my Mom, she was a huge part of his life. Only to find out his wife and kids did not reach out when they knew he was dieing of cancer. Its beyond the pale. Sorry I am hurting big time, as much as we love this crazy hockey team there is a lot more that matters.
Absolutely Highlander. Again sorry for your loss.
I want to thank all of you for last nights condolences, I do apologize for using the forum, but I was in a state of shock, still am. Again thanks for your patience and support.

I like (I think it was your) suggestion to try swapping Nylander and Marner. The PP needs a solid shooting threat on both sides. Teams are going to respect Nylander's shot more.

My suggestions from last year started with, let?s put our QB behind the net. It evolved to put Nylander on the PP1 because he?s their best carrier on entries and can pass AND shoot. This year it has evolved further to Marner behind the net so he can?t waste pucks shooting. I like Nylander back there and I?d probably still be excited about Marner on the half wall if he was on his strong side (harder to strip) and made better decisions than force an impossible pass to Matthews or take a lame wrister from far away.

Largely, the PP issues go beyond just Marner (and Barrie), it?s the general lack of movement. They?re just stationary turrets trying to thread passes and that?s pretty easy to zone out for the PK. The reason the first two/three years of PP with Hiller were amazing was because the PP units were always making attack runs at the net. PP1 would have Marner loop up and then drive down at the net off the wall to either pass down to JvR or across to Kadri for chaos. Willy and Matthews would both loop from the top of their circles and either zip a seam pass or rip one into the net from dangerous spots.

One-timers from Matthews is compelling but he can score in so many different ways. Same with Tavares and Nylander; all three of them have heavy wrist/snap shots, good slappers, pretty nasty backhands, can tip pucks, have the hands to wraparound, or bulldoze through the front for an ugly goal. Yet our PP QB thinks more shots from the worst wrister on the ice or the farthest possible skater is the solution.

At the end of the day, with the personnel we run, it should have every little to do with who is shooting and more to do with how many decisions/mistakes we can force the PK into making. Right now, Marner?s (McFarland?s) tunnel vision makes it very easy to stop and is wasting everyone?s capabilities.

And McFarland was supposed to FIX all that stuff.  He was supposed to be a Sunshine State Power Play Professor. Why is this so hard to implement?  I don't know half as much about hockey as most of you but I've been saying for 2 years now, drive to the net.  Create some chaos in front ? it's always to the offensive team's advantage.

And now that Matthews has worked on, and gotten really good at, a slapshot (which he rarely did before this season IIRC), that's all they look for.  Where's his unstoppable could-be-coming-from-anyway slingshot?

Lastly in this rant, Marner needs to practice shooting ALL. SUMMER. LONG.

Thank you Bender, and all the others. It is most appreciated. I am coming to know that all of us here are in essence good people, excepting Ice9.  LOL
