Leafs Get Andersen from Ducks

If push comes to shove, they can go over cap by as much as 10% in the offseason, with Horton's contract on the books.

It's not the offseason I'm concerned with. LTIR players still count against the cap and LTIR space cannot be used to cover performance bonuses. If you go into your LTIR space, you're considered to have maxed out your cap space when the season ends, and any performance bonuses get count against the next season's cap. The Leafs will have a lot of contracts with performance bonuses this season, and I imagine they won't want to be in the position where they have to carry a big chunk of dead cap space next season.

True, but wouldn't you think this move makes even less sense if they do nothing?

Not really, no. I don't think they expect to fix everything in one summer, and I'm confident they're not planning on building for a significant run in 16/17. I do expect other moves this summer, but I don't think they'll necessarily be big ones - and, I expect they'll be more focused on addressing the blue line.

Yeah, don't love that.

Probably coulda signed Reims to something like that without giving up the assets on top.  Here's hoping it's closer to 5M for an average starter in their prime.

He's an RFA with limited playoff experience.

mirtle: Hearing Frederik Andersen's deal with the Leafs is $5.5-million a season. That's a big commitment for a goalie with 125 games played.

mirtle: That makes Andersen the NHL's 16th highest paid goalie in terms of cap hit.

It's not the greatest number, but probably, roughly in-line with where he'd be ranked league-wide.

Andersen was probably the best available goalie on the market this summer, so, there's that. The price is a little higher than I would have expected, but not to the point where it's a concern. The contract will be interesting. Can't imagine it'll be less than $4.5M per, probably closer to $5M - effectively taking the Leafs out of the hunt for any significant UFAs until other contracts are moved.

I am thinking that T Bay might need some help at center soon.  Maybe Bozak could be moved there for UFA signing rights of one of their players.

Almost exactly.

Granted - I haven't seen much of him outside of the playoffs and when he's against the Leafs - but haven't the Leafs shelled him the last few times they faced him?

Hopefully, he fares better against every other team in the league. :P

The AAV on Andersen's new #leafs contract is in the low $5-millon range.

So we'll wait and see I guess.

Man oh man this is a gamble.  There was no reason to rush into something like this (the 5 year deal for an unproven goalie).  We've all seen goalie trades blow up in the Leafs faces in recent history, here's hoping the management is right about this one.

Yeeesh. Hope their analytics dept has cracked the goalie code, because that's a lot of money and a lot of years at a rather odd time. Wonder why they felt compelled to make a such a strong move toward solidifying that position now?

Cap hit of 5mil per according to cap friendly.

Which would put him at 18th for goalies - still roughly where he'd fit in the league rankings. (They also note that number is unconfirmed.)

Yeah, but I didn't even want them to crack the goalie code right now.  I thought we were still trying to be bottom 5 this year.

This is a really weird gamble/commitment here.

Of course WTH do I know. I though Toskala would be OK. NOT THE DEAL BUT THE GOALIE!!!!

CALM DOWN EVERYBODY!!!!!!! :o

I guess not?

Especially weird that they're so insistent on Andersen knowing he's the #1 by his contract (the LeBrun quote). First time with the new group that I think they've said/done something dumber than the last group.

Also, hard to tell where this fits into the framework of the plan (or whatever Lou calls it).
