This is a real gong show.  I no longer care about the game outcome.  Sandin....

Did not look good I'm thinking he's going to be out for a while. ACL maybe.

Hopefully just a sprain.  Having torn my ACL?.there is no way he could have skated to the bench

I didn't see the rest of the third but Frig Pionk. He keeps kneeing people. I don't give a flying Frig about what Spezza did. Good for him. Refs gonna let our guys get run repeatedly by the same guy, too bad. He gets what he deserved.

You know I hope this at least serves as the 100,000th reminder to fans and even NHL front offices that "deterrents" (in this case, Simmonds, Clifford, and even to a slightly lesser extent big boi Ritchie) don't prevent this kind of stuff from happening. If a dirty player wants to take cheap shots he will, regardless of the potential consequences. It's literally their entire MO.

?Is there anything better than beating the Winnipeg Jets??, asked no one ever.

Oh boy, just realized what this is referencing. So cringe.

I, unfortunately, do not know what this is referencing.  What's it referencing?

Honestly, I'd actually feel bad for them if I shared the video. Like I just can't. It's on the Jets' twitter page though.

Wow. I'd have been fine with a suspension for Spezza but a potential 5+ game for that? Come on.

The NHL/DoPS is pretty backwards in this: they always come down extra hard on retaliation penalties (and Kadri).

There's also some additional decision drivers like:
- we need to penalize stars so it doesn't look like favouritism (Spezza's an easy target because he is a name brand but doesn't make much)
- can't appear to be giving Toronto preferential treatment
- circle the wagons on bad refereeing

5+ games for unintentionally intentionally kneeing someone, especially considering Spezza has a fairly clean sheet in terms of suspensions and fines? Seems excessive.

Heck, average officiating would have sufficed.

Competent officiating would have been enough. The league has long been lacking there when it comes to this kind of thing.

EDIT: I'm still trying to wrap my head around how Matthews got penalized for being mugged. Like, did they hire amateur local officials for the game?

The NHL: Retaliatory hits are worse than [enter some horrible event in human history here]

Also the NHL after watching any big hit get responded to with someone getting their face punched in for absolutely no reason: eh, this is mostly fine
