Leafs @ Penguins - Feb. 18th, 7:00pm - SN, Fan 590

The heat map is pretty scary. Almost no shots at all from a high danger area.

Spezza's playing angry. That hasn't always resulted in good plays (the penalty) but it's something.

I haven't seen most of the game but if I vote in the MotM he'll be my choice.  Looks like he cares.

Does Dubas have the guts to do what needs to be done at the deadline ? even if the Leafs are technically in a playoff spot?

And play Liljegren, for God's sake.

Tavares with a characteristically sleepy game. Sometimes you need your captain to inspire and lead by example. Matthews has been doing that. Tavares hasn?t.

Obviously it?s not just Tavares either. Almost everyone is underperforming their contracts this year.

What would you like him to do?

I agree with playing Sandin and Lilegren as much as possible. Maybe trade Barrie if the return is good enough. Not sure what else should be done. The Leafs secondary scorers like Kapanen, Engvall, Kerfoot aren't producing and trading one of them will probably not get enough in return (presumably on defense) to make it worthwhile. I think we largely have to ride this out.

I don't think the big 4 have underperformed at all. Our depth scoring has completely disappeared, goaltending has been questionable and team D hasn't been great.

At this point I might be down for trading Barrie regardless of the return.  He?s not coming back and this team isn?t good enough to win a championship

What's wrong with the Leafs roster, realistically, is a lot bigger than a few decisions here or there.

Yes I consider the Clifford goal Spezza's.

Since I don't want to talk about the game, I'll expand on this thought from my MotM pick. It's weird to me that you're not allowed to kick or bat the puck  into the net with your hand. But if a puck is shot at you and deflects off your foot, hand, or any other body part you get credit for the goal. All goals should go to the last player on the scoring team that moved the puck with their stick. I'm aware this would remove like 5 goals from my buddy Zach Hyman's goal totals. Thank-you for your time.

Also true.  There are holes.  I also wonder whether this core group of players, as talented as some are, have what it takes to win together.  Sometimes there are teams that are loaded with talent and it never comes together.  Sort out of feels like this is that type of group.  The only 100% untouchable is Matthews.

This is a game where I?m really looking at Tavares and being pretty disappointed.  He did a lot of nothing tonight in a. Game where your captain needs to be a lot better

At this point it might be time to trade one of the big 4.

Trade Barrie for sure.  He was the wrong acquisition in the first place.

And much as I hate to see him go I would dangle Kappy.  He's definitely got value and will be attractive the right team.  Beyond that there's not much they can do right now.

The focus going forward should be revamping the defense (obviously).  I think we've seen enough of the team under Keefe/Dubas that you can't out-possess a defense with too many holes in it.

And sure, let Campbell roll for awhile.  Andersen has been bad for weeks now.

I keep reminding myself that it took Ovechkin, what - 12 or 13 years to get a Cup? I don't think we'll have this crew together that long but maybe over the next couple of years it will become apparent that one of the big 3 needs to be moved to make the overall team better. Maybe that would bring in the big top pairing defender we need to even out the roster. Otherwise...don't see that player in the system right now.
