Leafs PP - All sizzle, no steak.

I know it's still one of the higher ranked PPs in the league, but that Kessel on the side-boards play seems to do very little.  Phaneuf won't shoot the puck for some reason so it essentially means they have two guys in a poor position to shoot up high.  Also it looks like Kadri is playing with Kessel and JVR.

Orr starts well then

His first shift was awesome. First, Ranger couldn't get it out, then Orr couldn't get it out. It was like something we've seen over and over again.

Yup, commentary just went "Orr can't get it out" as his first mention since his return

Phaneuf's stopped taking one-timers, for whatever reason (partly because he's not being used in a way that allows for a lot of them), and, because of that, by the time he wants to shoot, the other team has guys in position to block whatever shot he was looking to take, so, he passes it off. On the plus side, he's making the smarter play at that point, but, on the downside, he's taking a huge piece of the his arsenal out of play by not taking one-timers.

Exactly, even Franson rarely shoots the puck.  Franson only shoots it when Kessel has drawn coverage and Franson sneaks in.  Otherwise both Phaneuf and Franson are on their strong sides and when they get the puck, by the time they go to shoot the PKers are blocking the lanes.  I'm going to lose it watching them do this every PP, especially after years of watching Kaberle feed McCabe for one-timers.

Yeah. It's frustrating. The team is using the right defencemen on the PP, but in the wrong combinations.

Kessel does need to move off the half-boards on the PP.  You may remember how the PP was stagnating under Wilson ... it was the same problem.  PK spent the whole PP in that small area and either had to try a backdoor pass or do a snap shot from there.  It was stale and predictable.  He needs to get the puck and swap places with one of the D, or drive the net, or something like that.  Mix it up.

Paging whoever runs the PP in practice...

Raymond leaking out tonight.  A second breakaway.  I think you could easily have called a hooking penalty on that play too.  It's one of Greg Millen's "the stick up on the gloves, it gets called 100% of the time" things.

Listening to the TSN 1050 radio broadcast, the play-by-play guy is pretty boring.

Almost makes me miss Joe Bowen ... ALMOST.

Carlyle just went with D'Amigo-McClement-Smithson for a defensive zone faceoff. So why is Orr even here?

Because...shutup.  Carlyle has a Cup.  And he was on the ice there...and the line was hemmed in the defensive zone the whole shift.
