Right, but it's never framed that way. Because "If they give Nylander what he wants, there'll be less money for Ron Hainsey" doesn't play very well. But realistically there's not going to be a huge difference in what's available to the Leafs if they sign their guys at 43 or 38 million. It's the difference between a couple low end depth guys or one medium depth guy and prospects/minimum salary guys who'll need to play at a high level. It's not the difference between competing or not, it's not being able to win or not. It's making Dubas' job a little easier or not and clearly Nylander has no interest in making Dubas' job much easier.
Right now, they're arguing about what "reasonable" constitutes. That's it. What happens in these games isn't really going to change that.
