Leafs Training Camp Opens

Contains some new jersey numbers too, although we might have to wait for these to be confirmed as permanent. Nylander has 29, Marner 16, and Brown 12.

Unless there's a trade to bring in a vet with one of those numbers, I imagine they are. It's not likely a coincidence that all the younger guys that have a legitimate shot of cracking the roster have more traditional numbers.

Also, no one seems to be wearing #34, for some reason.... 8)

Michael Nylander used to wear 92, so yeah Willie very likely chose 29 on purpose. Start putting your jersey orders in.

Someone on Twitter noted that Soshnikov appears to be missing from the list. I hope it's just a data entry issue (complications due to Dmytro Timashov camping on Sosh's number last year).

Or just a minor injury, a la Andersen.

Rob Longley @longleysunsport
Soshnikov not skating with the team due to a lower-body injury. Not cleared for contact. #Leafs

Michael Traikos @Michael_Traikos
Zaitsev on #Leafs keeping No. 22 open for him: "They told me about that. It's unbelievable."

Zaitsev gets 22, I've joked about it but Matthews getting his 34 is basically a slam dunk. I saw it pointed out elsewhere that Marner wore 16 for Team Canada before, so that's likely his choice. We've got real numbers here people!

Bracco just tucked in a dirty shootout goal.

EDIT: Team Kelly takes it.

Scrims every day 10:45 and 12:45 or something like that at www.nhl.com/mapleleafs.

77 Raman Hrabarenka?  Is this a reality?

(No noodles jokes please.)

He is here on a PTO and signed the same day as Prust so he was obviously overshadowed. His name is Anglicized to Roman Graborenko (which aids pronunciation tremendously) and he hails from Belarus.

Zaitzev, Marner, Hyman, Nylander, Matthews, Soshinikov, and Brown are almost a sure in the roster, unless really bad camps prevent that.

With Lupul injury, Brown's chances just wen't up but he has Michaleck and Greening to overplay at camp.

So a potential (and premature 1 day camp roster) would be:

JVR - Matthews - Marner
Nylander - Kadri - Soshnikov
Hyman - Bozak - Brown
Martin - Laich - Komarov

Greening / Michalek

Gardiner - Zaitzev
Hunwick - Rielly
Marincin - Carrick

Corrado

Other notable trying to land a spot: Leivo, Froese, Rychel, Kapanen, Leipsic, Gauthier and I would love to see Bracco make this decision even harder.

Thanks, I'd never heard of him.  I hope he feels no need to Anglicize his name -- this is 2016 and we can all learn to pronounce.

Polak??

My official premature 1 day camp roster guess would be:

JVR-Kadri-Brown
Michalek-Bozak-Marner
Komarov-Matthews-Nylander
Martin-Laich-Greening
Holland

Hunwick-Rielly
Gardiner-Zaitsev
Marincin-Carrick
Polak-Corrado

I think that we'll likely see pairs of JVR-Kadri, Bozak-Marner, Matthews-Nylander, Martin-Laich throughout the year. The 3rd spot on those lines can mix and match. Michalek and Greening could lose their spot to Hyman and Soshnikov but I think they'll really have to put in a poor showing at camp for that to happen. I'd like to see those kids in there but I don't see it happening to start the season.

On defence personally speaking I think I'd like to see something more like Rielly-Zaitsev, Gardiner-Carrick, Marincin-Corrado, Hunwick-Polak. A lot of it will depend on how Babs decides to form the top pairing. He has 4 lefties and 4 righties, but I just don't think he'll trust any of those righties to play with Rielly right off the bat. But maybe Zaitsev playing top pairing minutes with Russia could change his mind about that.

Hummm... Carrick chances just went down... Polak will be a regular... Corrado can sits and Carrick will start at the AHL

Also forgot about Holland...

Carrick would have to clear waivers. No way the team exposes him.

That's a similar roster to what I expect - though I think Brown, Hyman, and Soshnikov are all battling for the same spot right now (not necessarily in the lineup, but on the roster).

Does anyone think that Michalek and Greening might get waived to the Marlies?

After the lousy trade-deadline returns this past season, I'm not as sure they'll give them a spot on the big club if one of the younger players outplays them, which I think is a very strong possibility.
