The sad thing is that everyone is going to pick a side and circle their wagons and not really concretely addressing that hockey, as a sport that generally requires generations of privilege and wealth to participate in, is not-at-all-surprisingly steeped in a culture that implicitly condones and tolerates attitudes and expressions of intolerance towards non-cis-het-white-male.

I'd usually be right there with you on denouncing the useless dumb bro-yness of hockey culture but I'm not sure that this sort of language is any more prevalent in hockey culture than it is in, say, Football or Basketball.

If I were to refine my thoughts further, it would, as you point out, transcend sports. Bro culture in general is what needs to change.

Yeah, I think it is changing though. Like I was saying, I recently was re-watching the first season of Archer and I was genuinely shocked by just the sheer quantity of gay jokes that were in it.

Is it changing fast enough? No, but that's why I tend to think that the best way to address something like this is via further education for players rather than a perfunctory and performative suspension.

Hopefully this Flintor guy is right. I like Rielly and hope he's well beyond even thinking about using a term like that but as CTB says it would be naive to imagine that the NHL is populated with enlightened and perfect people like us.  ;)

As I said before, to me it's no different than using the N-word, and therefore unforgivable.

People on Twitter are now attacking Flintor saying he manipulated the audio lol

Dreger on Leafs lunch said there was no official incident written up by the refs post game so either a) they didn't hear anything b) if they heard something it wasn't a homophobic slur by a player or c) they chose to ignore it?

In any event, short of a player coming out and admitting he said it would be fairly difficult to prove based on the audio as you can't see Rielly's mouth so we don't know it's him

As to the term rag it, I thought that was pretty common in hockey, I've certainly heard it and even used it to describe a player handling the puck

From what I've read on twitter it seems like half the hockey community has never heard of it and the other half thinks that half are idiots for not knowing such a common hockey term. Pretty odd. Especially since it doesn't appear to be a regional thing either.

I'm pretty sure it's an older term.  Back in the day we'd say a player was "ragging the puck", like way back in the 80s, but for sure I've used it although it's not common anymore.

I'd also like to give Rielly the benefit of the doubt here.  In any interview or interaction you've seen with him, he doesn't seem like the type of guy that would say something like that, I would think he's more aware than that.  I guess we will see.
Yes "Rag it" was an older hockey phrase, haven't heard it for a long time but was common when I was a lot younger. Strange it would come up know and rhyme with F----t.  Rielly was abusing a ref a few weeks back with some kind of verbiage which we all though was quite funny, but I sincerely hope that this is inconclusive or he learns his lesson quickly.

Well I'm glad this was the outcome, and since the ref says it didn't happen I'll take his word for it. And like I said I do buy the "rag it" explanation. Pretty crazy coincidence how all the vocals lined up here.

Right at the end when the Tampa player is behind the net you hear another voice yell "rag, rag, rag". It has to be the explanation

They're gonna address this head on. Good to see the team is making this a huge issue as it should be. Shows they won't tolerate it.

Good news.

This news conference would be a great opportunity for Dubas to state explicitly what "not tolerating" the use of slurs means.

Glad it's cleared up. Honestly, my first gut instinct was there was some mistake. I couldn't see Rielly saying anything like that. I know people say things in the heat of the moment, etc...

I'm still appalled at people making threats and so on before an investigation was even done though. Sad really.
