Lou Will Not Return

So I have come to the conclusion that this is a ruthless forum. You guys like arguing and debating endlessly. The place is largely unmoderated. I'm not used to it. But I will try to stay and adapt. We'll see.

Well, you got part of it right, at least.

With respect to being unmoderated, I'd  imagine it's a rare thread that Carlton (to name one individual) hasn't read and taken appropriate action when needed. And ruthless? I'm not seeing it.

That's part of what makes this place so ruthless. You guys don't even realize that you're ruthless.

At this point, sickbeast is either trolling or is so relentlessly earnest in his sense of indignation that it amounts to trolling.

It's the offseason, so I'm not too bothered either way.

Regarding the topic at hand, Lou had taught Shanahan and Dubas everything he knows about how not to react when a good/bad thing happens on the ice, so it was clearly time to move on.

I've been around this site for 20+ years, going back to the penaltybox.com days and it's various incarnations.

1. The very nature of a internet discussion board is discussion.
2. You post your thoughts, observations, opinions, stupid remarks.
3. The very act of doing that, you are opening yourself up to rebuttal, alternate points of view, dissenting opinion, and yes even ridicule.

My screen name on here points to the very nature of a discussion board, that this is all mental masturbation.  My thoughts, views, opinions on the Leafs really has no bearing on the teams fortunes and outcomes.  This is a fun place to shoot the shit, not take things or yourself too seriously.

Times are a changing, and with that, even my own myopic world view has been challenged at times on here.  For example, when Brian Burke was trying to sign the Sedin Twins in Toronto, I had posted something about the "Sedin Sisters".  Nik jumped all over me for that comment, and rightfully so.  Did I like it at first? No.  My first instinct was to attack him back.  After some introspection, I realised that my comment was in poor taste, and I needed to change my views on things.

Having our viewpoints challenged never feels good.  Though I have found that if another persons comments really bother me, there is usually something in there for me to take a look at.

So that Lou Lamoriello guy eh? What a guy!

We've allowed everyone to say their piece and get whatever they had on their chests off of it. Anyone looking for more moderation will hopefully respect this request to get this thread back on track. If you have anything more to say feel free to post it here or here or here. And I'll say this ahead of time if discussion continues here I might start moving posts to another thread to keep this one on-topic.

Now, let's get back to discussing more important things like why is Lou using two phones in this picture:

I think the image with Lou using two phones at the same time sort of brings us back to the post that threw this topic so far off kilter to begin with.  8)

Friedman on Lou talking to Tavares before he was officially hired by the Islanders:

https://frshockey.com/nhl/islanders/friedman-weighs-in-on-islanders-changes/

?To me, the most fascinating thing about all of this is this whole thing with Tavares. Some of the other teams ? when we reported the other day that they?d met, and I sent out a note today that had more details on it ? there were some other GMs who reached out like, ?Are you freaking kidding me?? They are mad. Especially some of the other teams that really wanted to chase Tavares. They are so angry. They?re like, ?There?s no other guy in the world who would get away with this.? ?

?But some people just laugh and they know, we?ve always known there?s a set of rules for Lou Lamoriello, and there?s a set of rules for everybody else,? chuckled Friedman. ?I asked the league, I said is there a problem here, and I was told no. But I?ll tell you, some of those other teams are just going nuts.

I also found it pretty interesting that in one of the many articles from the past couple of days (can't find the specific one right now) Shanny admitted to not knowing about the Lou-Tavares conversations until the media reported it.

Other GM's being mad must mean Marc Bergevin.

The deal between the Islanders and Maple Leafs that allowed Lou Lamoriello to talk with John Tavares even while the exec was still under contract as a senior adviser to Toronto was orchestrated by ownership, Slap Shots has learned.

It is believed that neither Islanders? then-president and apparently still-GM Garth Snow nor the Maple Leafs? president Brendan Shanahan was aware of the agreement. In fact, we?re further told that Snow and coach Doug Weight were kept out of the loop regarding ownership?s talks with Lamoriello while the two men were scouting at the World Championships in Denmark.

That's basically what I expected. Still pretty odd that they didn't at least inform Shanny about it.

I'm not sure Shanahan would care much, intel if he doesn't take the job with the Isles and all, but Garth Snow certainly would have protested.  I can understand though that ownership wouldn't have discussed Lou's hiring with Snow, since Snow may be on the outs anyways.

Isles ownership likely had a handshake deal with Lou, and must have felt comfortable enough.  More upside than downside.

How is this not a conflict of interest?

Both ownership groups were cool with it, so how could there be a conflict?

It's more of a professional courtesy thing. I'm sure Shanny didn't appreciate finding out about the meeting because it got leaked to the media.
