The Jays wouldn't have traded for Dickey or given him that contract if he didn't have last season.Potvin29 said:Dickey's had more than 1 good season.

Bullfrog said:I don't think the leafs bought high. If he was getting a contract based solely on his ppg season, he'd be getting $6.5M or so.

I've never read or heard anything to make me think Nonis was ever going to blow the team up. If anything, I thought it was pretty clear that he was basically set to continue on Burke's path.
Either way, I don't think there was ever a chance they'd move Lupul after he fit in so well with Kessel. Even if Nonis planned on tearing down a lot of the roster, I think he believes those two are keys to whatever success might happen in Toronto in the next few years.

The trade, probably not, but the contract isn't all that outrageous even if it were only based on the two seasons Dickey had prior to winning the Cy Young.
Anyways, with regards to Lupul, you either had to go the route of signing him or trading him and if the inclination was to sign him then, well, it's not a bad contract. That said, I do worry a little that this means Nonis' plan is to sort of tinker with the club as opposed to blow it up.

Why would Nonis even think of blowing up the Leafs, or for that matter anyone??? we have alot of parts in place and only need to fill the holes.

Just those little holes of #1, Stud D-Man, and #1 goalie.
There is an article on TSN about how Bryan Colangelo has assembled perhaps the best supporting cast in the NBA, but doesn't have the star talent to compete with the top end teams. This is how I feel about the Leafs.

Which is fine and all but it means that the same concerns going forward with Burke are likely to still exist, namely finding a way to bring in the sort of high end pieces that the team will be able to build a championship on.
