Marlies Talk

Isn't Gus a UFA at season's end?

Yup

So. With all he's been thru here in T.O. who thinks he doesn't test the open market next season? Knowing that will likely be the case, Burke must be fielding offers for him now, during his hottest streak as a Leaf. My guess is he'll either be offered an extension real soon, or he'll be traded real soon.

Getting back to the Marlies, it should be interesting to see if Owuya gets one of the next 2 or 3 starts ahead of Scrivens. Should I start another goaltending conundrum thread for the Marlies? Why the hell are they running with 3 goalies right now?

Trade coming..... ;)

It's not really his hottest streak.  He went 20+ games from the end of the 09-10 season into the middle of November of the 10-11 season posting a similar SV% to right now.

As for testing free agency, if he doesn't have negotiations with Burke before the offseason, I'm sure that he will.  But if he plays well until the playoffs and gets the Leafs into the postseason, I highly doubt that Burke doesn't make an effort to sign him.  As much as he really has been given a much shorter leash that some of the other mediocre goalies the Leafs have iced under Wilson's tenure, they stuck by him.  He never went to the Minors, they didn't try to dump him when he had heart problems, and he came here to work with Allaire and he's getting a chance now.  I think that means more to the guy than anything else...and he's really giving me that kind of loyalty vibe with a lot of his talk.  Not that he doesn't want to win above all else, but I think he's one of those guys that wants to win by being really good, not by running around to find the most money to show that he's the best.

Marlies and Bulldogs AHL winter classic on Sportsnet right now if anybody interested.
Nice 7-2 win for the Marlies.  Deschamps Dupuis and D'Amigo all with 3 points.  Colborne with a goal, Scrivens with the win.  Neuber won a nice scrap against Schultz.

Impressive attendance - 20500 spectators - good for the AHL

Dallas Eakins is such a great guy to be where he is and sounds like he's on the same mission as the rest of the Leaf fans.

Great questions by Gord Stellick.

Didn't really want to make a new thread for this. Is anyone going to the game against the IceCaps on Saturday the 18th? I have tickets thanks to the MUN Alumni association. Would like to run into a few more familiar faces. Just keep in mind, I'll likely be cheering for the IceCaps on this one.  ;D

Although I don't see it happening because of so little pro experience, part of me would love to see Owuya given a start or two with the Leafs.  This may be a risk in the midst of a playoff race or he could be the real deal and just what we need.  I can't see this as being the route the Leafs take though as they may feel it is too soon for Owuya to make the jump. When Scrivens was returned to the Leafs once Reimer was back from injury, Owuya despite remarkable numbers was sent back to Reading.  He is only now back and playing because Rynnas is hurt.  I just don't think the Leafs are ready to test him with the big club yet.

I have to admit that I have been thinking about testing Owuya for few days too. I am just curious because his numbers look just phenomenal. I guess Eakins has to advise the Leafs, whether he feels the kid can handle the big club test or not. Whatever happens, Owuya might be the most promising of all our young goalies talents, although it may take few more years. His stellar play also means that one of the 5 goalies in the system would have to go. Sending Owuya back is next to impossible. I guess either Rynaas would be odd man out, or Burke trades one of the Gus-Reimer duo and gets veteran help rental such as Nabokov. But to keep all 5 young goalies playing is impossible with 2 jobs available.

I stand corrected on my comment that Rynnas is still hurt.  He was injured  in a Marlie game January 10th but once recovered he was sent to Reading and Owuya remained with the Marlies.  This must have been a tough decision because before Rynnas was hurt he was in the middle of likely his hottest stretch as a Marlie with 2 SO in his past 3 starts and a super solid 5 starts playing lights out.  Rynnas has struggled in Reading with a 4.43 GAA and .887 save % in 9 games while facing a ton of rubber it seems.  Keep in mind Owuya had a .929 save % with a 7-1-2 record on a pretty bad Reading team that has played just .500 hockey on the season.  Owuya looks to be a good one.

Where is that coming from? I haven't here one rumour of Holzer being traded. Why would they even, unless he's part of a bigger deal I suppose.
