Mitch Marner: what now?

But really, this is just some fans making a villain out of a parent because Marner hasn't signed for some stupid low number.

Exactly. Getting advice from a parent on an important life decision is something any of us would think is sensible. What filters down into the media is the idea of Paul Marner or Michael Nylander as some devious puppet-master secretly in charge of negotiations so that twitter-obsessed fans can have someone to hate that isn't the player they hope to be cheering for in a few months. If it wasn't parents, it would be the evil agents and how they're corrupting their players. It's just boilerplate garbage.

And it's not new. Remember how villainized Eric Lindros' parents were for...being concerned their son was being rushed back from a concussion? What a bunch of crybabies, am I rite?

It was boring to read last fall with the Nylander negotiation, and it's boring with Marner's.

Yeah, wasn't there a similar rumor last year that Michael Nylander was too involved in William's negotiations, and that's what was holding it up?  It's almost the exact same thing this time around.

I do find all the Paul/Dreger stuff funny, but not really accurate.  If Dreger is getting any leaks from anywhere, I'm sure it's from Ferris; not Paul Marner.

I don't think most care either way. I think they just love giving Dreger the gears calling him Paul after some of his inside info.

Heck, I'm 42 and I still call my parents for advice when I have a big financial decision to make. I'm uncertain if they're talking to Dreger or not though.

If it WAS just Willy listening to his agent and only him, guess who it was that picked up the phone and called Kyle with 40 minutes remaining in his season? It was Willy himself. A good agent can't just about the money, but will take into account EVERYTHING that the player values, from the highest priority to the lowest. Will it be Mitch himself picking up the phone on the first day of camp? We shall see...

More likely he'll fire off a Tik Tok video clip to Dubas

What are Tik Toks and why are they becoming popular? I've only heard of them through Tom Segura.

My kids think it's the greatest thing ever invented.

A tidbit:

https://ca.yahoo.com/sports/news/marners-camp-reportedly-asking-for-richest-bridge-deal-in-nhl-history-181930810.html

There has been talk for ages now about the Leafs? making a max-term offer, some time ago, at eight years and more than $10-million a season. Giving away that many UFA years, however, was a no-go for the Marner camp.

They apparently countered with three years at around a $10-million annual value, which would be the richest bridge deal in NHL history ? by quite a bit. (Consider that Nikita Kucherov?s three-year bridge back in 2016 was for just under $4.8-million AAV.)

If that report is true it's not that outlandish a notion. Kucherov's bridge deal would be for about 5.3 in today's cap. Marner outscored Kucherov by roughly 50% over the course of their first three seasons and in the season immediately preceding their second deals Marner again outscored Kucherov by roughly 50% with less PP time and doing PK time.

I don't know if all that doubles Kucherov's deal but using it as a yard stick indicates at least between 8-9 million or so on a bridge.

I think Marner is foolish to turn down a decent max term offer.  He's a small player.  All it takes is one big hit and his career could be over.  He gets to see his family more by playing in Toronto.  How much is that worth?  And can you really put a price on it?

I thought the 3x$10mil offer was something that Burke spit out awhile ago but was refuted afterward? I have a hard time believing the Leafs would offer that, or that Marner wouldn't accept it.

edit: Nevermind, I re-read and that was the offer Marner's camp made.

What was the gist of what Cox was saying in the Star today about not signing Marner, Star wouldn't let me read the story.

It really comes down to this premise:
So once again, the NHL is back in the business of paying players who have accomplished less in their careers more money than experienced players who have won multiple Stanley Cups and major awards.

A certain segment of the fanbase (and league) believes in paying players for what they've already achieved, as opposed to paying out what the projected performance of the player will be over the duration of the contract.
