Or he would have signed a one year deal and demanded a trade ?

Or not have played at all. Or signed an offer sheet for the deal he eventually signed. The simple reality is that the Leafs had absolutely no control over what Nylander eventually did. They didn't know what effect his absence might have had on the rest of the team or how it would have affected their negotiations with Matthews and Marner.

It's only the most simplistic, ill-informed sort of reading of this situation that would see the Leafs as being definitely able to control the outcome here while simply disregarding the significant downsides that could have been a result of throwing a grenade into the team's progression. It's armchair quarterbacking by someone who doesn't understand the fundamentals of the position.

You are correct. It's just possible that by holding firm in what they believe to be fair for Nylander just might have Matthews and Marner thinking they might have to accept a little less.  None of know how it would have turned out but missing a couple of months to gain very little did not serve the Leaf's well.

It should be noted that there's no actual evidence of Mirtle saying this, and that's an account absolutely nobody heard of before today. His article in the Athletic the other day roughly suggested the Leafs' offers might be in those ballparks. But as far as giving those exact numbers the tweet appears to be false.

If they see Auston as their comparable (5 years x $11.5-million) then their bridge would seem to be 3 years x $10-million. I can see Dubas countering with the more reasonable 3 x $8.75.

I'm guessing Auston's 8-year number was probably $13.5-million. He's on record as saying he went to 5 years to get the AAV down and give the Leafs more flexibility.

You guys bored?

$91 Million eh?  Seems like a bit of a tit for tat.

Word is when Columbus came a knocking with their super generous sheet they were told thanks but no thanks, he wants to play in Toronto. Don't know how many offers there have been but none have been signed, I'm guessing the Islanders get the same response. Just a negotiating tactic to drive up the Toronto price as high as it can go.

And yes, super bored Herman. Is it pre-season yet?

Don't know @grammadubie, Wrestlers are cap-immune and have an automatic 2-way. Leafs need some more grit and jam.

I mean I don't think it's happening at all, but since it's mid-August why not talk about it. Something around Marner for Boeser+ could potentially make some sense if the Leafs decided they weren't paying Marner what he wanted but the Canucks would.
