Do you think that would really change much? To me it feels like the offer sheet market is dead mostly because GMs don't want to step on each others toes. It's just a dumb culture thing that I don't see really changing. I can't imagine it's the fear of the compensation that's preventing guys like Laine and Tkachuk from getting offer sheets under $8.5mil (the 1st, 2nd, 3rd tier).

I really do.

Take Marner for example. A lot of people here have said that Marner may not be as valuable as 4 1st round picks and his cap space. I don't think that's true but that's something that every GM in the league has to consider. Remove those 4 1sts from the equation and it becomes a lot more difficult for a GM of a bad team with a lot of cap space to explain to his fans/owner why they're not out there seriously pursuing top tier free agents. If signing Marner has no such asset swap I think he'd be seen more as a regular free agent and none of us see signing UFA's as stepping on other team's toes.

Then, once your top tier RFA guys sign then players like Tkachuk and Laine have a market and they're more likely to sign too. Or to go out and get the deal they want from someone else.

I wonder if doing away with compensation might help getting some offers flowing on lower and mid-tier players as well.

I think it's best to just relax and wait. From the players side of the equation, all have said they're confident that something will get done. The only people talking about offer sheets and trades are the media folk. And rightly so, they have to earn a living and it's got to be tough writing about the Leafs in the dog days of summer.

If I was a betting man, and I'm not, I'd wager that both sides believe they have a solid framework to build on and putting on the finishing touches won't take long. So, rather than spoil a beautiful summer in the Muskokas, they take a break and agree to reconvene in late August to finalize things.

Let's flesh this out a little more...how would that affect the Leafs, and other teams, spending money developing players?

Maybe, like I said I think that the less GMs think of RFA's as still belonging to the team that holds the matching rights the more active the market gets, but I don't think it's a 2nd round pick that prevented teams from going after Kapanen or Johnsson, it's that most teams have their own version of those guys.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. Partly because of your discussions in the past, I've really come to view these players as what they should be: FREE agents.

CJ?s radio hit today updating on the Marner situation
https://www.sportsnet.ca/590/prime-time-sports/cj-marner-contract-nylander-confidence/

Mitch Marner called up William Nylander to get some advice on the contract situation. CJ doesn?t believe there is much of a gap between the two sides at this time, and it appears to him that the Leafs have stepped closer to Marner?s agent?s ask.

What about a straight up trade for Laine?

I prefer Marner and admit that Laine tends to be a bit streaky but Laine has more size and it might solve both teams' problems.

It also sends a message that should have been sent last year.

It is merely a suggestion  but feel free to flame away.

Laine's comments sure make the Marner situation seem tame by comparison.  I mean Mitch has barely commented at all about his contract and you've got Laine saying he's had no talks with the Jets, doesn't know where he'll be playing next season but hey, it's been pretty OK in Winnipeg I guess.  :o

Yesterday Craig Custance reported that the Avs haven't even offered Rantanen a contract yet this summer.

I don't even want to get into the contract stuff or "message sending" but even just in a hockey sense trading Marner for Laine feels like it would exacerbate the Leafs' problems, not solve them.

Here at William, Auston and Mitchell... we're working. For you!

When does training camp start?  If the sides are close we should hopefully see a deal done soon.  It sounds like this could give the Leafs a cap problem to deal with, though.

September 13th.

The Leafs will be opening their training camp in St. John Newfoundland on Friday September 13th.

They will play eight pre-season games (we?ll be bored after the first one, but for now that seems fun).
