Mitch Marner

Small, but the odds are usually small when trading a star. That doesnt appear to be the calculation that teams always make when they are sitting near the bottom of the league like st louis is.

Most teams that are near the bottom of the league make it a priority to trade guys who are either:

A) Old enough that they may well be past their prime before the team is competitive again

B) Under short term contracts who are most valuable with as much term remaining as possible

C) Actively want out

As far as I know, Parayko doesn't really fall under any of those categories. Trading a 25 year old with 3 very reasonable years left doesn't seem to be par for the course regardless of what St. Louis' plans are for the future.

Anyways, that's why I think a lot of times when teams are looking to move significant pieces they favour young roster players and prospects with some post-draft development time over picks. How young players/prospects develop isn't a sure thing but it's far from the crapshoot the draft is.

Interesting hypothetical that I saw floated around: let's say Marner signs an offer sheet for $11-12mil on July 1st. The Leafs would then have one week to decide to match it or take the compensation of four 1st round draft picks. During that week, they speak to one of the big-3 free agents (Karlsson, Panarin, and Stone) and agree in principal to a contract. Let's say $11mil for Karlsson, $10mil for Panarin, and $9mil for Stone. Or whatever. Basically the question is would you take the four 1st round draft picks as compensation for Marner and use that cap space to sign one of those 3 free agents instead of matching the offer sheet and keeping Marner?

I would, because it's not Marner for four 1sts and whatever you can do with that cap money (Stone, say). Matching an offer sheet like that would, I'm pretty sure, necessitate not only letting Gardiner walk but probably losing Kapanen (I don't think moving Brown would do it).

So, the calculation is: is Marner > four 1st round picks, a very good/ borderline elite UFA winger, and Kapanen? I think Marner's great and will probably be a top 5 winger in the league if he isn't already, but.... no. He's probably not worth more than that.

So awesome, she'll never forget it and probably the most popular kid at her school now

Not to rain on Marner but if Matthews can gets 10 points in his next five games he will tie Conacher as fastest in Leafs history. So great having these 2 on our team!

I remember that. That was a great duo, even with Mogs in the last half of his career.
