NHL's 24-team Return to Play proposal

I'm assuming the NHL and the PA are in agreement on these things, because if this is voted down there'd be a big problem getting the season started on the timelines that seem to be in place.

I don't think the issue is easier or harder, I think the issue is that whoever wins this little tournament will be doing so in conditions that will be drastically different than the games that took place during the regular season.

The idea of an asterisk is, obviously, shorthand for a larger question of what a cup won under these circumstances would mean. If someone out there would be really excited by the Leafs winning, if the claims of it being tainted wouldn't both them, then I guess that's their prerogative. Likewise, if you think that most of what makes your favourite team winning a championship would be absent and, as a result, it wouldn't do much for you that's equally valid.

I just enjoy watching them play.  I even like watching preseason games. I?d rather they win the cup in a normal season, but i will get plenty of entertainment out of watching them play this year if it happens. I certainly prefer it to no hockey at all (with the caveat that I don?t want my indulgences to cause others to do something risky ? I?m assuming the risk can be minimized).

Interesting that they're trying to cram in return to play measures, a CBA extension, and Olympics participation all in one big bundle.

It's interesting they could fit that all together so quickly, but the last time they talked olympics, the discussions went on for months and months and months.

Sure. All things being equal and safe, I suppose I'd rather there be live sports going on right now then not although I worry that when people talk about sports being a "distraction" from our current difficulties it also means a way we've used them as a distraction from more pressing societal priorities that now have momentum behind them

Personally, though, I'd like them back whether the Leafs were good or bad, had a chance of winning or not. It'd be fun to watch. If we're not all caught up in winning or what validity there'd be to "breaking the streak" in these conditions...I think that's a positive step.

I saw this and thought, I should share it with tmlfans, but get the direct tweet from Seravelli since he?s the author. Turns out he didn?t bother to self-promote it and just retweeted Bob, so here?s Bob with the foreword.

Well, I'm disappointed that there won't be major changes but that's just what the NHLPA is about these days I guess.

Once hockey starts though I'm not really sure what the point of hiding the identity of someone who tested positive will be. I mean if Matthews ends up missing a game for "undisclosed reasons" I'm pretty sure we'll all be able to connect the dots there.

If Matthews gets it again this quickly, then we've got a whole new set of problems.

From an employee/labour rights perspective... the CBA doesn't let a team disclose the exact illness, other than the fact that it prevented the player from playing without the express written consent of the player.

I agree.  But I honestly don't see the need to hiding the identities now.  I actually think it's kind of a silly they're withholding it (privacy issues...yeah yeah).  There is no stigma for testing positive for the virus (unless you acted stupidly like Djokovic).

Any guesses as to how many players opt out of the RTP?  Beyond Domi who might not even be allowed to play.

And if any, who do you think it might be?  Price was vocal with his concerns.  I'm sure others too have many concerns despite not publicizing them.  Would older players opt out?  Possibly upcoming free agents?

Montreal should strategically have Price and Domi and some randos opt out for a chance at Lafreniere

I wouldn?t be surprised to see some older pending UFAs on bubble teams opt out, and a number of guys who are not likely to get much, if any, ice time, too.
