That's fair but I think you'd have to be in the room to really tip the point of decision.

You don't need to be in the room to know the team is falling off a cliff and that a coaching change, at the very least, couldn't hurt.

Personally, if it doesn't matter and is unknowable at this point I'm inclined to let him play it out and fall on his sword.

That strikes me like saying that a parachutist whose chute fails shouldn't bother pulling the reserve because you're inclined to see how this whole falling thing works out.

That's only if you think your chute has truly failed and doesn't really address the loyalty factor.

I get what you're saying, it couldn't hurt at this point and it's tough to make a solid counter to that but I don't think something unknowable is going to be a factor until the deed is done.

If the Leafs don't make the playoffs they get another chute next year.  :-\

Jeez, I know the team has been bad for a while but I haven't quite yet developed a loyalty to mediocrity.

But it's just as unknowable then. Even if it is a shot in the dark, why wait to take it? At least now there's the potential for the season to be salvaged.

Ha, no, that was Burke's loyalty to his 'chute'.

I'm not as big on salvaging this season for the playoffs as some so maybe that's more me than anything.

If the Leafs don't make the playoffs I'd sum up the season like this, Wilson got pretty much what one could expect out of a largely one way bubble team with decent goaltending for two months of the year, but, it's time for a change.

I don't know if Burke will see it that way or not, I hope he does, at least with the last part.

Oh, well in that case then it's an argument for firing Burke as much as Wilson.

I mean, not to step on toes or anything, but the story of Nero isn't the heartwarming tale of one man's dedication to the fiddle.

Well, according to Doug Armstrong that's what got him fired in Dallas, being loyal to his coach so yeah, that kind of loyalty can be looked at as two edged, even if your sword only has one. ;)

Hey, if for nothing a burning Vatican gives good headline.

I like the way this discussion is trending.  Is there a way to dethrone the Pope?  MLSE = College of Cardinals?

Better have a big stick if you mess with the Battlepope...

I'm pretty sure it won't help, but hey let's try something as opposed to nothing.

DarrenDreger: Leafs could move a bunch of players for high picks, but Tor needs players, so unless the picks can be parlayed...not much help. #tradecentre

would picks really be all that awful?

No, but, they're also not the end-all and be-all. Like Dreger says, the Leafs need players.

Not arguing with you, but if we move 3/4 players I'd imagine Colborne/Frattin/Kadri/Holzer etc. could fill the hole for the rest of the season.

Honestly if the Leafs move a bunch of players for high picks, they'd be throwing the towel in on the season and freeing up cap space. Tor only needs players if they believe they can contend, which I think everybody believes they can't.

They seem like opposite ideologies to me.

players to do what though ...if we're to trust burke at his word ..he made it clear last year that he didn't see a point of trying to make his way into the playoffs just to be taken out in the first round ...i can't even imagine the deal he'd have to pull off this year to assure they'd not only make it to the playoffs but would also go deeper than the first round ..

so by burke's logic ..isn't it time to trade a few assets and start the work on next year?

Well, partly, players for next season. This summer's free agent market is really shallow, and Burke has been pretty consistent in not rushing prospects into full-time roles on the big club before they show they are absolutely ready. We're not talking about holding on to a bunch of pending UFAs that would likely be gone in July - these are almost all players that are under contract for next season and who would need to be replaced somehow.

Yeah. Tomorrow's probably going to be pretty boring. A bunch of minor deals, lots of talk about Rick Nash without any movement there and a lot of people being disappointed that nothing big happened.

Well, at least you have like 8 hours of hockey related TV to watch, even if it's not all that interesting. :-\
