Nonis using depth to go shopping....

I just heard this on CKNW 980 in Vancouver on the noon hour sports...

We have a local buffoon named David Pratt who does a "commentary". He's a true idiot who picks crap out of nowhere and pumps it. The latest today is that Gillis is still talking to Nonis about Luongo and the 2 pieces (never said either together or an individual trade) from Toronto side is Bozak - (wow no scoop there) and Lupul..... He went on to comment that the issue with Lupul is that he's injury prone and has 5 years left on his deal with the Leafs.
I almost spit out my soup....

What an idiot.

If we had 2 first round picks this year we could use them both to move up in this rich draft.

The most recent reports about this draft is that it's not particularly rich, but, rather, top heavy . . . which means, it's unlikely a team is going to trade down from an enviable position to take 2 lesser picks.

i would still take Columbus' first rounder than a 'low' prospect for Mac.

Are Kassian, Gaunce and the Nyucks' 1st round pick joining Luongo as part of this deal, because, I mean, that's the only way the Leafs would begin to consider it.

"And if we make deals now, by and large those will be for pieces that can help us.?

?...if there isn?t something there that?s going to help us now and more importantly in the future then we?ll go with what we have."

"If we can add some depth and get a veteran presence at the right price we would do it but not at the expense of young players."

"But where we sit right now, that?s because of the guys in the room and just to move them out wouldn?t make a whole lot of sense unless we can help the group. I think everyone understands that. To move players out for draft picks, that doesn?t make a whole lot of sense for us."

"We said early on we want to make sure we?re showing progress; that?s the biggest target for us. You don?t want to set yourself back so ultimately you?re not progressing as an organization."

I think he has left himself some wiggle room there, depending on what becomes available. Glad to see he's giving the locker room consideration as well as indicating he has a longer term eye, generally.

Mac for one of CBJ's firsts, yeah, I kind of doubt they'd offer that but sure.

Bob McKenzie just posted on twitter that the leafs have been granted permission to speak with Kiprusoffs representatives

Dont get it, Kipper doesn't qualify as that vet 3rd goalie for depth.  If he were brought in I would imagine Scrivens would be dealt as there is no way he would clear waivers if sent to the Marlies.  If the Leafs are thinking a Scrivens for Kipper deal rather than give up a pick I am not sure Cgy does that and of course I don't like it.

Anyone think Cammalleri might be an interesting pickup if he's on the cheap?

You know, he and Lupul could split time on the LTIR?

I could be wrong about this but I thought there was some noise the last time that he was a UFA about how he very specifically didn't want to play for the Leafs.

There was also talk that he specifically visited the ACC to talk to Leafs management about negotiating a contract, but they weren't all that interested at the time.

Better not to pick up anyone with a significant cap hit next season unless they're expected to be a key contributor. I'm not sure Cammalleri would qualify there. I just don't see him being worth $6M on a $64M cap.

Yeah, I just keep going back to that top 6 centre thing.

I guess I'm kind of torn on if they need to add a body there...I think that Kadri and Grabbo could handle 1C-2C...McClemment 3C, and ? 4C.

I'm just not feeling super comfortable with the FO% of Grabbo/Kadri.

EDIT:  I'm assuming Bozak is history.

Erik Johnson.

I threw it out last night on twitter and interestingly enough either Dreger or McKenzie floated his name an hour later.  Either they steal my brilliant ideas or I am some sort of wizard, but either way, if this guy is possibly available I would be all over that.  He's in a similar boat to what Phaneuf was in Calgary... not quite living up to expectations and on a team not going anywhere.

he would be fantastic on the 2nd pair either with Liles or Gardiner (assuming he doesn't cost Gardiner to get, which he might) and the pressure to be 'the man' wouldn't be as much behing behind Phaneuf.

I may be inclined to trade them straight up, basically you get a guy with a heavy shot, moves pretty good for a big guy and is grittier and better defensively than Gardiner however he is 3 yrs older.  I think with Reilly coming along soon it may be a smart move.  With all the love for Gardiner out there right now you may be able to snag a pick as well to offset the contract and difference in age.

We have to look at what Colorado would be interested in, and with Barrie/Elliott already in their long-term plans I don't think a puck-moving D-man like Gardiner is what they're looking for to replace EJ.

Colorado's management is funny though. They make a lot of unconventional decisions so who knows..
