Nonis using depth to go shopping....

Last year might have been an anomaly. This rebuilding will take time. Glad he will not make any haste moves. You look at any top team today, they held on to their youth and their picks.

Sorry had to:
Berger doesn?t think the Maple Leafs will trade James Reimer before the trade deadline, but wonders if they could get Dustin Byfuglien for Reimer and Carl Gunnarsson.

I don't think they'll trade Reimer before the deadline either. The rest of it is garbage, though.

I have pretty low expectations of what Nonis will get when Reimer is eventually traded, and I also think that Byfuglien is getting unfairly criticized for Winnipeg's struggles. So I would actually be very happy with a trade like that. Maybe I'd try and involve Franson instead of Gunnarsson though.

Goalies have tended to not go for too much in trades lately.

Hah, this article literally just popped up on my twitter feed:

Schneider received a top-10 draft pick in June, and Varlamov was traded for a 1st and 2nd rounder a couple of years ago. Those are probably the best returns a goalie has received lately.

Yeah, and you could definitely argue Reimer should go for similar returns as those two.

Yup. And for me that'd still be a pretty underwhelming return unless it's like a top-10 pick. But there's really no guarantee of that. Even if we trade him to the Islanders Reimer might be able to push them out of the basement next season. That's why I'd rather try and package him in a trade for an impact player.

Winnipeg would make the most sense.

I think I'd love that trade.

I was just going to post that. For Kane or Ladd. I had this very conversation at the coffee shop this morning with another die-hard.

First, I don't think there's really any chance the Jets trade Ladd.

Second, Reimer's the biggest trading chip this team has and he offers Nonis a big opportunity to fix a problem on this team. So if he's being traded I would prefer to see him moved to address a team weakness (centre and defence) not a strength. We have enough salary tied up in our wings already.

The more I think about it the more I wonder if Franson+Reimer would even be enough for Buff. It's very difficult to gauge his value. I think we would probably have to add. But I think he would be a fantastic addition to our defence. And his cap hit is pretty fair too especially with the cap going up.

And it'd be nice to jump on a player whose available because his PDO is ridiculous low instead of giving up those kinds of players.

Can we figure out how to get Kane in the deal too since he's getting unfairly blamed as well? :)

I don't think its far off from Fair Value.  You could argue, given the salary differential that Reimer + for Buff would work, and if that "+" is a PP specialist puck movingish defensemen who has a small history of top end scoring for a d-man...I think its pretty fair (RFA status and all).

I would love Buff in our top 4.

They'd have to take Clarkson back to make the cap work, but I guess I'd be alright with that. You know, if we have to.
