Official Armchair GM Thread 2014-2015 Leafs

Hey guys.  Wondering what it would take to get Nurse from Edmonton?

They're a team that's starved for impact players on the blue line, why would they trade their best defensive prospect?

Don't know if I posted this elsewhere but I'd love to see Lupul and Franson go to WPG for a 1st +. I think that would make WPG a legit threat to win the Cup (which I wouldn't mind seeing) and the Leafs would get Cap relief + some nice futures.

I think it makes sense for both clubs, no?

When healthy they have Byfuglien, Enstrom, Bogosian, and Trouba as their top-4 defence. That's pretty good. They only had blueline problems because of injuries, but all of them but Trouba are back now and he's due to return in February.

Yeah I thought of Franson as more of the rental of the 2. Bogosian doesn't really have a history of much, consistent,  production (outside of his last 6 games). Enstrom had a terrible year last year and is an injury risk.

Franson could be a 3rd pairing D-man and a top 2 PP specialist. He may be a better option on the PK than who they've got on the 2nd PK pairing. Their 5 and 6 D-men are Stuart and Harrison when Trouba comes back. Lupul could take Perreault's spot on the 2nd line or Halischuk's spot on the 3rd line (playing with Either Scheifele and Frolik  or Lowry and Kane). He'd be a very welcome addition on the #2 PP.

Do they absolutely need them? Maybe not. I'd say adding those 2 take them from a good team to a very good team with depth.

I think that WPG has solid RH shot dmen that play tough, are big and are defensive.  I have felt they could use an offensive minded LH dman and since I do like WPG (and FLA) I was hoping that the Leafs would trade Gardiner to WPG.

5 vs 5 Maurice prefers Big Buff as a RW fwd with Scheifele and Kane as the 2nd line and Ladd, Little and Wheeler as a 1st line.  Having Frolik as a LH RW with Perreault, who is playing lights out the last little bit as the 3rd line center, a RH LW like Lupul would be fantastic for WPG.  I just prefer Clarkson leaving. :)  Then WPGs 4th line would be the 6'5" kid Lowry, Slater at center and Thorburn, Peluso and Halischuk fighting it out for 4th line RW.

Enstrom is Colaiacovo/Lupul fragile.  Adam Pardy, Harrison and Stuart are all big, tough, defensive LH dmen.

The lines during their relatively dominant run of success have been Buf on D, a second line of Perrault/Scheifele/Frolik and a line of Kane/Lowry/Halischuk FWIW.

Also they already have 2 better versions of Gardiner in Enstrom and Trouba. Gardiner is about the last thing they need.

Anybody not playing Byfuglien on defence is an idiot. Hopefully Maurice realized that the last month or so.

Friedman just mentioned Phaneuf for Richards.

That's actually something I'd consider if they included a 1st and a 2nd.

Then move Franson for a 1st and see what else is out there for some other guys and the future looks a lot brighter.

It'd make our team infinitely worse, but 3 first round picks would go a long way to easing that.

Edit: If it were possible to move Franson and Lupul for Bogosian and a 1st that would be huge. 3 1sts, some cap space and Bogosian and Richards replacing Lupul, Franson and Phaneuf. Won't happen but it would if I were GM (and WPG would make that trade)!

Thing about Richards is, he's playing that way in LA sure, where do you think Bozak would be on that team?

I don't get what you mean. Richards isn't the player he was. I wouldn't expect much out of him which is why the Leafs would get a 1st. If he doesn't work out at least he's good defensively. They've been contemplating buying him out so I'm guessing they'd make that deal in a heartbeat (could be wrong about that).

I'm not sure that's a great comparison. A big reason Richards find himself on the 4th line in LA is because of how much his skating has gone downhill. He couldn't keep up with their top 6 wingers. Bozak's still a very good skater.

I dunno, I still suspect he'd out perform Bozak given the same opportunity in T.O and if he came with a big pick, I'd make that trade.

He'd struggle to keep up with JvR and Kessel. Like, seriously struggle. Honestly, unless it's straight up for Clarkson, I'd say no.

Fair enough, you think he's beyond Barb Underhill's help?

Due to the leafs being so close to the cap and the mess that finds them in I think they have no choice but trade Phaneuf, Gardiner, Lupal and maybe even Bozak. One return they must get is a number 1 center even if Nylander develop[s into that in the next couple of years.

Byfuglien is playing solid as a dman now but if you remember when Claude Noel was coaching Byfuglien was terrible with giving aways, missed assignments and bad pinches.  It was Maurice who put him at fwd.

If Buff remains at RD with Bogosian, Trouba and Postma also playing well on the right side something would have to give.

I think it would be interesting to see Richards in the locker room with Booth after Richards effectively ended Booth's career.  I also have read that Booth is a really good guy and that Richards is a donkey hole.  I don't know either man personally though.
