Official Armchair GM Thread 2014-2015 Leafs

bustaheims said:
Also, if I remember correctly, the rumoured asking price was actually Kulemin (fresh off his 30 goal season) and Kadri.

Yeah, at the time Dreger said Kadri for Carter was discussed but the Flyers wanted Kulemin as well and Burke wouldn't do that.

I'm looking up old articles on this and one thing that keeps popping up is 'how is Howsen going to move that 'albatross' contract', as Carter kind of fell apart the next year. Hindsight

Ex-Leaf Curtis Joseph on why Reimer should be kept:

On RFA James Reimer?s future in Toronto: ?Coaches have short memories, too. Just like goalies. Trust can be regained. You can make mistakes and get benched, then have some great shifts and get your ice time back. [The Maple Leafs] can bring back Reimer, no question. If you take a step back, you?ve got two very talented guys. The No. 2 guy can come in and play as a No. 1. That?s a great strength. L.A. had that [in Quick and Bernier], and they waited to parlay that until they got a good deal for Bernier. I wouldn?t trade [Reimer] away. He?s a big guy with lots of talent. Sometimes it?s just something that clicks. I wouldn?t give up on him.

?It might be [best for Reimer to get a clean slate with another team]?if he?s going to be a No. 1 somewhere. But who?s to say that? They always say, ?Go where they want you.? Because if they really want you, they?ll play you and they?ll believe in you and give you a great chance. But is there somebody that?s willing to trade a second-round pick for him? Maybe not yet. So I would hang on to him.?

Playin'

Goal here is to have significant improvement at centre, including two centres on the wing, capable of stepping in. I moved Lupul out (assume for now nothing coming back) to make some room.  In general, centres have far far better brains for defensive responsibility.

Here is my latest stab at it (Been away for a few days with this up in my browser working on it so it might be brilliant or completely irrelevant now):

I really hope the Defense is upgraded:

Leafs 5th pick for NYI Dan Boyle.  Sign Boyle for 2 years @ $5 MIL per

Trade Phaneuf retaining $1 MIL to Edm for 2014 3rd pick overall after talking to Florida and Buffalo and insure that Ekblad does the 'Seth Jones' and falls that to 3rd.  Sign to 3 year ELC @ $0.925

Try:
Holland, Gardiner and Franson and the 2016 2nd Round Leaf pick to Nsh for Weber.  :D

Realistically would have to try:
Kadri, Gardiner and Franson and the 2014 1st Round pick but I was trying to avoid that.

At Forward:

Sign UFA Stastny to a $7 MIL 7 year contract and hope he earns it every year as a 20 - 25 goal scorer with intangibles.

Replace Kadri with Holland, Gardiner with Brennan and Franson with Ekblad.

At Goal:
Reimer's value is at it's all time low.  I would hang on to him and see if he can redeem his career.

I know you're just playing around, but what's the point if it's not even remotely realistic? I know you want Weber on this team, but it's not happening. There's pretty much no package that the leafs can put together thatwould make Nashville move from their publicly announced stance of "we're not trading Weber, ever."

And if they were to try, Holland, Gardiner, Franson, and a 2nd rounder is comically far off.

If I was to take a rough guess (ignoring actual team needs) a starting conversation point would be Kessel or a package of something like Rielly + JvR + two first round picks.

Sign Vrbata and Boyle and put Lupul back with Kessel to balance things out a bit:

Lupul      Bozak  Kessel
JVR        Kadri    Ashton
Clarkson  Holland  Vrbata
D'Amigo  Boyle    Leivo

Trade Phaneuf and our 1st to Edmonton for Ference and their 1st. Retain a small portion of salary if need be. Sign the other Boyle. Draft whoever is left out of Bennet, Reinhart and the German guy:

Gardiner Gunnarsson
Rielly    Ference
Boyle  Granberg/Ranger

Finally, replace Carlyle with any rational, thinking human being. Boom, playoffs maybe and a high end top prospect to boot?!

That was a tribute to my Dave Scatchard trades from a few years ago mainly to poke the bear.  I mean if Gretzky could be traded.....

On a serious level I am hopefully not too unrealistic:

Stastny has no chance coming to the Leafs

Bolland, Raymond, Ranger and Kulemin are gone.

Bodie is most likely gone as well as Komarov.

Leafs could get Dan Boyle on a 2 year deal

Phaneuf could go to Edm for 3rd overall as he is more than twice the player of Nikitin and only $2.5 MIL more and draft Ekblad.

Franson could get re-signed.

Various Marlies can fill in forward positions.

I don't want the Leafs to move the 8th overall pick.

Fantasy-wise....I would still like to see the 2nd line add E Kane and Byfuglien moving Lupul out.

Unrealistic free agent based lineup turnover, mark googolplex +1... with a dash of Marlie... not a lot of cap flex but also a lower cap estimate.

Trade Phaneuf, Kadri, Lupul, Gleason, Franson, Reimer for picks, prospects and Boychuk. Sign Stastny, Moulson, Vrbata, Pouliot, Boyle ( short term ), Weaver ( short term ) and Peters.

I'm sorry - but that's a very sad group of forwards you've got going on there.

Look at the final 4 teams in the playoffs, now look at those lines again.

Sad.

Seems plausible enough though. Swap out Holland for Bolland, and it's about as plausible, and as much a not-playoff team.

Never mind the forwards. That defence corps really depends on the younger guys taking that next step quickly and that age doesn't impact Boyle and Ference the way it has so many other NHL defencemen.

Going from recent blue and white smoke signals, they're going to try to sign, sort of, and promote from within, so... maybe.... Sign Pouliot and Peters, trade for Boychuk. There's room there to try for either Komarov or Reimer too, internally, or perhaps add a Weaver or such.
