Official Ottawa Senators Thread

Nick Kypreos says he thinks both players are currently untradeable.  He could be right.  However I would be surprised if no one wants Karlsson.  He's an elite player.  Heck, the Leafs could use him.

He may be untradeable based on the Sens asking price.

Kypreos said he may be untradeable because the allegations are unproven and could be false.  He said teams need to know exactly what happened between the two players and their wives before taking either of them in a trade.

Id be willing to bet that the Karlsson's hired a PI to look into this matter before going to the authorities. As for Kypreos' comments. There isn't a gm who wouldn't take #65 right now for the right price.

Yeah. I think to really buy that this would affect how Karlsson is seen you'd have to think there was a possibility not just that he and his wife are wrong but that they're acting in bad faith. Not only doesn't that seem likely but it also seems like if it were possible it would be the sort of thing that was known beforehand.

This whole scene reminds me of the 1990-1991 Leafs.  Wheels came off, rumours were rampant.  Team needed to be blown up.  I think Nik has a valid point.  Stuff like this starts at the top.  Organizations need to be run professionally.  I sometimes wonder if that was the real reason for bringing in a guy like Lou.  Not because Dubas didn't know how to do the hockey stuff, but maybe he didn't know how to do, or at least didn't have a lot of experience with, the non-hockey stuff.

So to step back from the tabloid-y nature of all of this...is there anything to say about why this is going on? Is it just that Melnyk's a terrible owner? A freakish run of bad luck?

I've long maintained that the Sens' situation, where they claimed to not be profitable in any year they didn't make the playoffs but seemed to be forced by their owner to try and be profitable every year, was the least manageable organizational gameplan you could have. Does all the penny pinching lead to corner-cutting that leads to this sort of chaos? I know it's hard to connect the Karlsson-Hoffman stuff to the team but I can't help but feel that maybe a more professional environment wouldn't allow for that sort of thing.

I think when you cut staffing down to the bone, everyone is forced into doing more than he or she can effectively carry for very long, and it looks like the 'organization' brushed away a lot of the little details and non-priorities to the point that it has compounded into a turd pile in the middle of their living room floor about 2 ft from the ceiling.

Yup. He's an elite talent that won't have trouble finding a new team if/when he wants one. This personal stuff gets blown out of proportion. When teams are losing, it's headline news. When teams are doing well, it never seems to be an issue. If any GM is really spooked about acquiring because of this, that GM needs a new job.

That might be the case.  The argument against that though may be that things ran rather smoothly when Brian Murray was there, and it's really only been since he passed away that things have really started to spiral out of control.  The front office has been run on a shoe string budget for a while.

Hoffman and Caryk on the allegations:

Hoffman and Caryk react to story

It's kind of fun to try and work out all of the possible scenarios here:

1. The Karlssons are right and Hoffman and Caryk are complete whackjobs

2. The Karlssons are wrong, acting in bad faith and a bunch of NHL wives are basically the meanest of mean girls to this one innocent person.

3. Some sort of honest mistake.

So even if it's #3 , there is still some fallout there because the EK didn't even really discuss it with Hoffman until after going to the police.

Why such a delay in suspending the assistant GM?  And why wasn't this whole Karlsson feud handled internally?  What are they doing in Ottawa?  They're going to have a huge problem on their hands.  Players aren't going to want to go there.  I'm really thinking they are going to either have to relocate the team and/or find a new owner.  It's too bad.  They do have a passionate fanbase in Ottawa.  It's a small market but I would be very sad to see it go.  And if it goes to the USA I will not be happy about it.  If it goes anywhere it should be Quebec City or else Hamilton or the GTA somewhere.  Sure, Seattle would probably be more profitable, but I'm tired of seeing the Canadian franchises leave for the states.

Seattle's applied for a expansion team so if the Sens were to move to the states it would probably be to Kansas City or Houston.
