Official Ottawa Senators Thread

I think it's already been announced that the Quebec group would have the rights to the Nordiques name if they got a team.

I'm not entirely sure how connected Edmonton scribe Jim Matheson is to the Ottawa-scene, but this paragraph in an article talking about a potential Karlsson-to-Edmonton trade scenario is... something...

If the Oilers are making their pitch, any talk of a straight-up Leon Draisaitl for Karlsson swap makes no sense from the Ottawa side because owner Eugene Melnyk is operating on the cheap. He?s looking for multiple pieces in a deal, with the Senators in rebuild mode like the New York Rangers. He?s not looking to take back a big one-off contract, especially for a centre when he?s already got Matt Duchene at $6 million.

Interestingly this story (plus the trade) has made it to the UK newspapers where you would only really get one or two reports and year, of which the Stanley Cup winners would be one

I realize that pointing out that Don Cherry is a dope is sort of beating a dead horse but I think it's sort of noteworthy here to point out just how wrong he is. Almost nobody has faulted Hoffman here. I haven't even really seen a lot o people in the media say that his girlfriend is definitely "guilty" even though it's pretty reasonable to do so.

What I have seen is an acknowledgement that the situation as it existed was untenable and Ottawa was obviously going to move Hoffman instead of their Captain/Best player who they're still probably going to try to sign.

Also, I love this part:

"His reputation is in tatters. Sure he ends up in Florida, taxes are almost non existent, weather is great, better team etc but that will never compensate for a ruined reputation."

His reputation is in tatters! Sure, he ends up in a waaay better city with waaay better tax rates and a waaay better chance to win and the GM of his new team says everybody will be completely welcoming to both him and his girlfriend... but, uh, what was I talking about again?

Interesting yesterday that Blue's GM Doug Armstrong said they talked to the Sens, talked to the Hoffman, talked to some of the players and decided not to pursue Hoffman. Anyone know if this "retraining order" effects Hoffman's girlfriend's ability to enter the US?

There's virtually no doubt in my mind that within a week or two the Respectable Hockey Insiders will uniformly be of the opinion that the whole thing was just a spat between player wives and the good hockey boys had nothing to do with it.

As a PS, I'm really starting to think there's a real problem with the hockey media in some regards. Virtually any podcast I listen to will have something to the effect of "You know, I can't share the details but I know some things that would have made for a big story" from media members. I'm starting to think it's a whole industry built on not stepping on toes.

This is a perfect example. There's no way this gets found out before the police are involved?

The part from Hoffman that he emailed Karlsson to talk about the issue tells me this is a little more than a Wives spat.  I can't imagine a situation that i couldn't just walk over to the guy i play with to discuss the issue.

Gotta preserve that privileged access to the backup goalie's pre-game cliches, amirite?

Honestly I think they reached that point yesterday sometime between the first and second trade.

According to the radio out here in Calgary the Senators knew about the situation between the wives before the trade deadline. They would have gotten a much better return if they traded him before the whole thing became public.

League/PA probably has a fixer. Look how quickly all the Patrick Kane stuff went sideways and evaporated. Check out the NHLPA crisis communication team on LinkedIn. Or this NYU essay on sports PR.

The sens have done a lot of dumb things lately but keeping this pick might top all of them.

I'm not so sure. True, the Senators don't look like they're going to be very good next year but the league is so volatile that even before you get into lottery stuff I don't think anyone could say with any kind of certainty that they'll be bottom five next year.

Unless they're legitimately tanking then all it would really take is a bounce back year from Karlsson and Anderson for them to be no worse off than they were last year.

I'm not saying it's a sure thing but I'd honestly peg it as an even money bet.

And I'd just add to this and say that with all the bad press lately, picking a nice prospect might be something they need right now.

During the season, depending on how things are going, they may be able to pick up a high pick with some creative trades.

I think their fanbase would go bananas right now if they gave this year's pick to Colorado, when combined with the uncertainty around Karlsson.

I really think they should give this year's pick to Colorado and keep the 2019 pick.  If the Sens are a disaster again next season (which it looks like they will be especially if Karlsson is gone), they'll have another shot at #1 overall next year which is #1 center Jack Hughes (the next Auston Matthews)
