Official Ottawa Senators Thread

Wow. So, let's just sum up. The Sens:

- Didn't get a definite 1st round pick in 2019

- Didn't get a prospect taken in the top 15 or a pick that's likely to be

- Didn't dump the Ryan deal

- Probably won't get two 1sts

I mean, on the one hand, that's not very good. On the other hand I think we all predicted that Ottawa wouldn't do very well here. But on the third hand...if you're a Dallas fan aren't you a bit upset you couldn't beat that?
On the fourth hand, isn't everyone upset that their own team couldn't beat that?

Just to be a contrarian, I'm going to say that it's no sure thing that Karlsson will ever be as good as he was.  That injury he took ... OK it's still a horrible trade.

Maybe, but I think the trade condition makes it pretty clear that he wasn't getting dealt to the Eastern Conference no matter what.

Also, legitimately, there are some teams where it wouldn't have made much sense(Nashville, for instance).

Yeah, but it's still pretty astonishingly bad a return, isn't it?

Obviously Karlsson wasn't going to get traded within the conference, but it'd be like the Kings trading Doughty to us for, like, Grundstrom, Brooks, and the two Connors. Plus the picks. -- You'd think Dallas, say, would've been able to make something a bit better than that happen.

Doug Wilson is really good at finding suckers.

I think to find a fair equivalent here you'd probably have to swap Liljegren or Sandin in for Brooks there, Norris is a mid first round pick and everything, but other than that yes. I did literally say that exact thing:

But on the third hand...if you're a Dallas fan aren't you a bit upset you couldn't beat that?

I guess but coming off injury he still put up 60 points.  If he isn?t the best defensman  in the league he?s still a #1

And, considering the dumpster fire that the sens were last season, 60 points is a very impressive number.

Here's something I was idly thinking about...

In a vacuum, would you rather have what the Sens got for Karlsson or what the Habs got for Pacioretty? The Karlsson return is almost certainly more stuff just in sheer numbers but for Pacioretty the Habs may have gotten the best prospect in either deal, the best pick and even potentially the best roster player.

I think you answered your own question there.

Actually, scratch that. I fudged the Pacioretty return. I thought they'd gotten a 1st and a 2nd and not just a 2nd. So Ottawa probably got the best pick.

Former lawyer turned Oilers analyst turned Athletic staff writer, Tyler Dellow is live tweeting the Caryk/Karlsson case.

Here's is write up on why they're in court.
https://theathletic.com/518822/2018/09/12/analysis-why-are-monika-caryk-and-melinda-karlsson-going-to-court-on-friday/

Point 10 in the summary of evidence presented in Ms. Caryk's affadavit:
The Ottawa Senators claimed that they were investigating the matter but no investigation occurred.

Like the weird Monday night video, and the botched handling of their AGM's criminal charges, all the Hoffman/Karlsson drama (Dorion traded them both to Doug Wilson's Sharks, btw, which still boggles the mind), it really just looks like a case of 'ain't nobody getting paid enough to deal with any of that'.

Their blueline is excellent, no doubt. Probably the best in the league now. I just don't think they have the firepower up front to make it out of the 2nd round.

They only need to worry about Vegas/Anaheim/LA/Calgary or maybe a cross-over wildcard team from the Central to get to the Conference finals though. I think they're a pretty clear step-above the other Pacific division teams.

My only caveat there is that it feels like that's something we could have said about a bunch of teams in the past before age caught up with them in a hurry.

Their collection of talent under 30 isn't great. Under 28 and it's pretty sketchy.

Oh yeah, if I was Karlsson I wouldn't be rushing to sign a long-term extension there necessarily (unless he loves living in San Jose, in which case I wouldn't blame him). Back in all the Tavares talk I definitely wrote about how San Jose doesn't have a very large window to contend, for those exact reasons. I'd essentially be considering this an all-in year if I was Doug Wilson. The fact that they have a relatively easy path to the conference finals re-enforces that.
