I know leg and groin injuries can be finicky and this is probably not something where Campbell sits if the season is on the line but it really highlights that we need another goaltender

Totally agree

With all the reports suggesting that Andersen isn't done for the season I don't think it's really that simple. The options there would be to get another cheap #3 goalie, preferably from a Canadian team, like a Domingue or Forsberg but I mean I'm not sure anyone can confidently say someone like them would be clear upgrades over Hutchinson. Or you go and get a more expensive pending UFA like Bernier or Raanta (assuming either are healthy by the deadline) but then you're eating up the money the team had earmarked for a top-6 forward upgrade for a goalie who might only play a handful of games for the team (if any at all).

That's fair. I'm not super concerned about them coming from a Canadian team, as the hope is they'll go straight to the taxi squad (also, it's only 7 days now, which is manageable for acquiring a backup/#3 goalie). There aren't a ton of options out there, obviously, but a few that could/should be considered:

Troy Grosenick - has bounced around a bit this season, limited NHL experience, but performed very well when needed.
Wedgewood/Dell - Devils have 3 goalies on their NHL roster, and aren't in the playoff hunt. One will almost certainly be dealt. Re-acquiring Dell would be nice for a chuckle, but Wedgewood is probably the better goalie.
Calvin Pickard - because, reasons.
Adin Hill - if the Coyotes fall out of it, and their goalies get healthy, he might be available.
Carter Hutton - the Buffalo retains 50% of the cap, it could be workable. He's not a great option, but experienced guy who might get his game together behind a better team - and, as a 3rd string guy, not a huge risk to see if he can.
Ryan Miller/Anthony Stolarz - Anaheim is definitely a seller, Miller is a pending UFA who isn't putting up great numbers, but a vet who could be a reasonable #3 option. Stolarz has a couple years left on his deal, which means he can be the goalie exposed in the expansion draft if Hutch is part of the trade.

Since the hope is obviously that these guys wouldn't get into any games (or be more than the dressed backup), obviously, we're not talking about anyone who really moves the needle. Just need someone the Leafs feel they can trust more than Hutchinson.

The ironic thing here is that Hutchinson has a better save percentage this season than almost all the goalies you mentioned. Obviously he isn't a .922 Sv% guy, but I still think generally speaking it's a coin flip as to whether or not any of those names are upgrades over Hutchinson (other than Hill, who almost certainly isn't getting dealt with Raanta likely leaving as a UFA this offseason).

If the Leafs can bring in another #3 goalie at a low cost and it doesn't mess with the cap too much, then sure go for it. But I do think the cap ramifications of a move like that could be a problem, especially since a number of the guys you mentioned can't get assigned to the TS without going through waivers so they would take up a spot on the active roster.

But I just don't see it as an absolute priority for the team, or something they HAVE to do. Even if we see Hutchinson games as a guaranteed loss (which they of course aren't), I don't really have a problem eating a few losses with him in net to make sure Campbell and Andersen get their breaks when they need it. At the end of the day if both of those goalies are hurt in the playoffs we're probably pooped whether it's Hutchinson or Wedgewood or Grosenick anyway.

Yeah, good point Carlton re the playoffs.  If we are down to a 3rd stringer as starter we're cooked any way you look at it.  Heck, at the point I'd throw up my arms and give the ball to Woll and hope for a Murray-like or Binnington-type miracle.

It's not worth trying to upgrade Hutch.

Ryan Miller is still in the league.  Huh.

You missed the beauty he let in this past week.

*scrambles to Google*

OK, I'm back.  What I took away from that clip is that Dallas Eakins can cut through steel with those eyes.

I also think we're probably basing our Hutchinson opinions a little too strongly on his last start. And I mean, I get it, but prior to that he's pretty much been as good as you'd expect a #3 goalie to be. If he lets in 2 goals on 3 shots again tonight I'll agree more strongly that change is needed there.

I think there's a little more history involved in people's opinions of Hutchinson.

Definitely need to upgrade the #3 goaltending option, no question.

Adding to this, the schedule for April is just brutal especially considering that Campbell can't seem to play more than 2 games in a row for fear of re-injury.

Leafs have 15 games in the month of April and only have 2 or more days off in between games twice all month.

I gave BOTH our sub-.900 Sv% goalies from 2020 a fresh start ;)

Doesn?t matter who?s in net, Leafs can win this.

Will Campbell be backup? Or big V? I?d think if Campbell isn?t 100% then they shouldn?t dress him at all. With Hutch in net there?s a decent chance the backup gets game action.

GO LEAFS GO!

I know I?m not the target for the Next Gen games but are lame graphics really enticing to kids to get into hockey?

But, Kaskisuo isn?t in the organization anymore...

Can we all just agree that his nickname is Velveeta.

It works either way.  If he?s good he?s smooth and creamy.  If he sucks well he?s just a block of cheese
