I don't know if it's possible but if you could get for Raymond something along the lines of what they gave for Holland that would be a pretty neat little turn of events.

I could see a bubble team looking for more offence parting with a 2nd or a 3rd for him (or an equivalent prospect).

I doubt they'd trade Raymond at all. Even if he sits when everyone is healthy, he's an excellent depth guy to have if the team is in a playoff position.

And really, for $1 million for one year, pretty much out of nowhere, who cares if he walks in the off-season for nothing?

You just changed the argument mid-stream.  We're arguing about whether he deserves to be in the lineup when Clarkson and Bolland come back, not whether he'd be valuable trade bait.  He would be.

No. We've been discussing whether or not he has a spot in the lineup, not whether or not he deserves to be in over guys on the 4th line.

Which, you know, as much as I like the signing and everything should be what the team is looking for ultimately. I know people aren't as enamored with the prospects Burke left behind as they once were but at some point they need to start giving some of those guys a legit chance to make a low cost impact on this team.

No. We've been discussing how he's achieved more relative value than Kulemin.

Also, a team that's not a Cup contender should be looking to add as many potentially valuable young, long-term assets as possible when there's a reasonable opportunity for them to do so - like, by moving a spare part.

Sorry if I missed your response, but which players under $3 million would you prefer the Leafs had that bring what Kulemin brings?  I think you said they were very common, or something to that effect.

I agree that they probably won't but being as the team has some guys I'd be just as comfortable with in that role I think they probably should.

Huh?  You lost me.

Anyway, I am very confident in saying that a lineup with 14-goal Raymond in it is better than no-goal Ashton and that Raymond will not be the one sitting.

I doubt Ashton would have no goals if he was given the same offensive opportunities as Raymond.  You can't just ignore their respective positions in the lineup, everything has an effect on production.  Playing the PP versus not playing it.  Even Crosby would have troubles on a 4th line with Orr/McClement playing 6:00.

Guys with the same (albeit streaky) offensive upside?

Honestly, with the way Carlyle uses his bench, I think Ashton might actually be a more valuable 4th liner than Raymond. If Raymond's not in the top 9, he doesn't really have a spot where he contributes. He's a better player than Ashton right now, sure, but he's not necessarily a better fit.

5 straight goals has given us the luxury of spending the entire GDT arguing about the relative merits of 3rd and 4th liners.

Terrific line.

And speaking of potential 3rd line players, Phaneuf has been pretty steady the past period. ;)
