I'd really prefer he skip the Olympics and rest whatever ails him. We need him and Kessel fresh for the final chunk games leading into the playoffs.

I wonder how many Nashville fans feel that way about Shea Weber right now.

What I can tell you, man?  If I'm a coach I'm going to play a guy with 14 goals over a guy who has never scored in the league, ever.  30 out of 30 coaches in the league will agree with me, of that I'm quite sure.

I have to assume that most coaches in the league can grasp that these numbers don't exist in a vacuum.

Yeah, but this isn't too tight of a vacuum.

The way holland has played since his recall, I see him as the odd man out when Bolland returns.

He hasn't produced much offensively, but, he's been a driving force in his line getting good possession in the other team's zone and getting a good cycle going. He may not be bumped up to the 2nd line, but, unless he gets sent to the Marlies, I don't see him playing any lower than the 3rd line. He could move to the wing there and Kulemin might stay on Kadri's wing.

Entertaining game against a bottom feeder. Game summary: every maligned player on the GDT responded with a goal.

except Phaneuf

And Orr

But I think ye olde hockey gods knew what I was up to mentioning him there

somewhat easier to feel that way with him playing for Team USA as opposed to Canada :)

Orr looked like a beer league player out there. Always far behind the play. The guy can fight but i do not understand why they need him in a game like this. Bodie looked good. Ashton looked good. When Bolland and Clarkson return I hope that Orr sits.

Just got back from the game, fantastic rebound from the Rangers blowout I went to earlier this year.

Kadri was really good tonight.  He's really heating up since the return of Bozak.  15 points this month and is on pace for a 60 point season.  Congratulations on hitting 100 career points tonight too.

Tim Gleason has been much better than advertised.  CORSI stats aside, he's doing a lot of little things very well on the ice.  He's throwing hard hits on the boards, he does a good job of chipping the puck out of the zone, and he has done a good job of guiding Gardiner/Rielly when he is out on the ice with them.  Every whistle he would be talking to them about positioning and he was doing a solid job of directing players in the defensive zone.  He's not the Gleason of 4 years ago but he is much better than what he was producing in Carolina.

Bernier got lucky a few times with Florida missing empty nets but made a bunch of big saves too.  He does a really good job of slowing the play down by finding pucks rolling around near the crease when the Leafs need a whistle.

Florida PP...wow is it ever bad.  The Leafs need to play Florida more often.  They would honestly have a 95% PK I think.

And my favourite player...Colton Orr.  He was comically bad tonight.  On one play the Leafs got the puck to the front of the net.  Rather than trying to get a stick on the puck, Orr tried to battle for position in front of the net (and lost).  He had absolutely no clue what he was doing.  I don't think he threw a legitimate hit the entire night.  If he got credited with one, it wasn't deserved.

And one day, Ashton has to score on one of those breakaways.  That has to be at least his 4th this year.

Of the 4th line fighter/checkers, I think Troy Bodie continues to stand out as the best of the bunch at this point.  He skates fairly well, does a good job of getting in on the forecheck and has chipped in more than his fair share of points (6 in 21 ---Orr's career high is 6 in 82)

Montreal is Toronto's #1 competition right now. Technically the Leafs are ahead, but by 1 point with 2 less games remaining.

It would be so money if Toronto could get that 3rd spot. As much as I respect Tampa Bay as a good team, I think they're also the team that the Leafs stack up most favourably against in a playoff series.

To shift gears a little, I haven't seen one thing out of Ashton that leads me to think he'll stick in the NHL.  Wasn't he a 1st rounder?

Really hard to judge the guy on the 5-6 minutes a night he's getting.

He's been around long enough.  Never scored yet, I believe.

45 career games, 29 of them this season at 6:15 per game, for a 22 year old is "been around long enough"?

TBL gave up on him even sooner.

I'm sure that Calgary felt that Martin St. Louis had been around long enough when they put him on waivers, too.

Yeah but he's 'Spencer Abbott'-small.  In today's NHL, you need face-punchers.

That trio is unique because both Lupul and Kulemin play their off wings ? ?which is kind of mind-boggling,? said Carlyle ? but no one is questioning it as long as they?re producing.

I think it all depends on how ready Bolland is when he returns. If he's good to play the 3rd line centre spot Holland's probably going to the Marlies. If he's only 3rd line winger/4th line centre good then Holland sticks around. But I can't see them moving Holland to to the wing and bumping Raymond down. Carlyle likes him too much.

5 straight goals has given us the luxury of spending the entire GDT arguing about the relative merits of 3rd and 4th liners.

Terrific line.

And speaking of potential 3rd line players, Phaneuf has been pretty steady the past period. ;)

I knew I remembered your posts.

Funny that last season you had no trouble pointing out Phaneuf's +/- rating as a criticism of him, but oddly silent this year about it?  Pumped Fraser's tires for his +/- but unwilling to afford Phaneuf the same.

(You shouldn't use +/- as your main argument, btw - this is actually a great example of how useless it can be)
