R1G4: Bruins @ Leafs - May 8th, 7:00pm - CBC, Fan 590

The posts have not been the Leafs friends in this series. They rung so many off the iron . . . if one or two of those had gone it, they'd be leading the series.

I only started watching from the beginning of the third, but I had no idea that Orr played that game until I checked the box score. I just assumed Randy scratched him for MacArthur.

Two shifts in the second. None in the third. None in overtime. Did he get hurt or did Carlyle just show why he absolutely shouldn't be playing in the playoffs?

Took a bad penalty (got his arms up on recieving a hit) So i assume Benched!

You know I'm just not angry about this... The bruins are a good tough team, and the leafs are holding their own against them...

This reminds me of the 91 jays that got spanked by the twins. The jays were a good team but there was just a player or 2 missing to push them over the top. I think this a preview of better days to come.

But Nik is right, the Leafs had a lot of chances to win the game and couldn't finish around the net/translate space into high quality scoring chances.

I still can't believe Kulemin didn't end it on that chance.

Id rather stop blaming phaneuf and start asking kessel why he was constantly flying down the wing and taking low percentage shots like it was nhl 2002..

Yeah that goal in OT was totally Kessel's fault.

No but, while we can still acknowledge it was a crummy decision on Phaneuf's part, the Leafs were playing with 5 defencemen for a good chunk of the game. The longer it went the more likely it was someone made a mistake. The Leafs had their opportunities, Kessel included, and really struggled to actually generate big chances. At some point that was unsustainable, even if we do want to assign Phaneuf a legitimate share of the crap.

Good post.  I am disappointed in the outcome of the game, not the playoffs.

I kind of feel the same way. I didn't really have high expectations for the team going into the playoffs. As long as they didn't get embarrassed, I was going to be content with their performance - and they certainly have not been embarrassed, as far as I'm concerned. This only a step in the process.

He looked so nervous when he turned around and he still had the puck.

I don't usually get worked up over the outcome of a game, even in the playoffs; usually I can be really zen about it.  But man, I wanted this one.  I think the Leafs outplayed them, especially in OT, but Rask had other ideas.  Man, he looked totally in control out there.  Hats off.

Still, it sucks that this didn't work out.  They had this game.  I'm glad the Leafs are making things interesting, but ugh.

Nik is right. While Phaneuf's screwup ultimately cost them the winning goal, the Leafs needed to bury one and couldn't. It happens so often - one team carries the play, but can't score and all of a sudden it's over.

Had Reimer made the save we might not have this collective vitriol against our captain right now.  The puck just squeezed through him, and he didn't challenge the shooter, unfortunately.  It was such a good effort by the Leafs forwards, and Gardiner, that was unrewarded, unfortunately.  But it still was a very exciting game.

The bad pinch by Phaneuf was really not much different than most of his decision-making that he has exhibited in his 3+ years with the Leafs.  He will still make bad decisions with the puck, and his hockey sense will not improve.  This is what the fans have gotten used to with him, and it will remain the same, IMHO.  His play is reminiscent of a line by Pierre Page when he was a coach with the Nordiques, in describing the incredibly talented (yet troubled)  Bryan Fogarty:  'he plays hockey like the planet Venus  -  you know it is out there -  you just don't know what it is doing'.

Phaneuf let his personal vendetta against Horton get the best of him.

Really stupid decision on his part

As far as Im concerned the playoffs have been a rousing success...we won at least a game against a team that everyone predicted was waaaayyy better then us and we've won more games then Vancouver. Our team will be much stronger next near for this.

Man it was sad seeing Reimer's family's reaction in the stands...

I thought it was funny

What is frustrating though is that given this level of effort I truly believe the leafs could have beaten any other team in the east as the isles are proving...
If the bruins move on they better make it to the finals and lose to San Jose.

I just don't understand what Phaneuf was thinking there.

Meh, the Leafs have fared much better than I expected. It won't appear that way losing in (probably) 5 games but they were competitive for the most part.
