Fire away, but I say Tavares is our best forward.

This may be me being controversial but while he's certainly been our most consistently healthy goal scorer all season and is clearly an excellent player who does a lot of little things well my takeaway this season has been that he may be in the perfect role as a #1B centre. In New York they needed him to be a Crosby-McDavid level one-man show and I really don't think that's what he is.

Ah well, some nights you just don't have it. Especially on the 3rd game in 4 nights.
Wings are on a 3 in 4 as well.

Sure and sometimes teams, Leafs included, are good in a 3rd in 4. Sometimes they hit a wall. Sometimes they're bad with rest. All teams have peaks and valleys. I don't see the point, even in a cathartic sense, of getting mad about the occasions when they don't play well.

I'm going to tee up Marner just a touch ahead, but yeah, full value.

I say Matthews is ahead of both of them.

It's nice that we can have these types of discussions.

Prove it.

Well, my enjoyment per/60 is up over last year, and possession of the tv remote is off the charts. But just an opinion, though.

I think of the 3 candidates I'd say he and Marner are neck and neck in terms of 2-way play and their consistency game in and game out.  Tavares is a better scoring threat (obviously).  Matthews isn't quite as consistent.  I agree Tavares is not Crosby/McDavid level, but neither are Marner and Matthews.  There's not much separating all 5 but right now I'd rank them Crosby/McDavid/JT/Marner/Matthews,* with the latter two fully capable of leapfrogging Tavares.

* not saying the top 5 in the league, just ranking those mentioned

Classic Trevor Moore play. Rare Gauthier shot and goal! He likes aiming for the top corners and camps in a good shooting location.

A lot of players really go out of their way to hug Marner.

Wait Matthews isn?t as consistent a scoring threat? Just wanted to give you the heads up that stats are coming your way.

I think it's very difficult to try and separate guys on the same team and try to measure them in isolation. The Tavares line has been better this year than the Matthews line but the Matthews line has been less consistent in terms of who's on the line, to say nothing of the injury to Matthews specifically.

Personally, I'm not sure I'd be wild about Tavares if, at 11m a year, he was expected to be the team's #1 night in and night out. As is, he's a very fun luxury to have.
