Rick Nash potentially available

DarrenDreger: CBJ hasn't talked to Leafs in days. Tor will keep trying, but like NYR and Del Zotto, Gardiner remains untouchable.

I see $3,716,667 this year and $1,666,667 next under buyouts with a max cap hit of $10,518,690 there.

I see it as well. It didn't display yesterday.

Good news!

It's certainly not bad news but again, I ask... Why? Doesn't this go against what Burke has always maintained that he would trade anyone if it made the team better? Is this kid really going to be a franhcise defenseman like Niedermayer?  I mean, I hope but really?

That's happened to me before with that site, not to knock it or anything as it's usually fairly accurate, it might have just been in a state of flux or some such.

Well, the question is really whether or not trading a bunch of young assets actually makes the team better (and still in line with Burke's plan) or does it just make the fans happy? Depending on what other pieces Columbus has asked for, it could very easily be much closer to the latter than the former.

Well, I think a lot of fans including myself would be happy to keep him but depending on the return, I think you have to listen.... I'm not talking about Columbus specifically. I mean, take Ryan for example... You wouldn't include Gardiner in a deal for him? Sure you would... This untouchable thing seems silly to me.

And, really, why start showing any interest in making fans happy now?

I'm sure glad that management is not making decisions based on emotions, like a lot of fans are right now. I guess I could have put this comment in any of the various threads, but there has been a lot of emotions spilled out in these pages lately and a lot of it has been negative, rightly or wrongly.

I don't want us to trade young players, or at least promising young players for older better players and abandon development. I think there is too much focus on playoffs as a marker, rather than development and patience.

I know you have to make trades to improve your system and it always depends on what you'd be getting back in a deal, but I agree with Burke if he isn't going to trade the system for Nash and not keep developing what he's struggled to acquire in thew last 3 years here.

I did try to answer your question in the link below and there was a series of questions before about the possibility of trading Gardiner straight up for Ryan and, IIRC, it seemed to fall in the 'no' side mostly due to how hard it is to get a true number one defenceman.

...a little more digging and I found this response too.

I agree.  The bar needs to be very high to deal him but nobody on a non-playoff team in untouchable.

Well, going back to Gretzky, sure but unless the deal is sure fire going to make them better minus Gardiner is the point, as untouchable as it gets?

Obviously possible Rick Nash could move by tomorrow but it were close in any way do you think CBJ would've played him today? #TradeCentre

Interesting point from Bob Mackenzie

If you can get a player like Nash, that first overall impact player, why not move Gardiner?  I like Gardiner, but really  is the team going to be built around him?  Is he a franchise defenceman?

TSNBobMcKenzie: May be a tactic by CBJ, or not, but teams with most interest in Nash don't believe he'll move by deadline. Switching focus to other targets.

I don't know... but why don't we try to hold onto our youth for once and try to find out?  Trading for Rick Nash has bust written all over it.

Adding Nash would be very tempting, right now for public consumption (through the media) Burke is saying no to moving Gardiner, but I think he has to be considering it. I can see the case for and against making this move and if I was in charge I'd have a very tough time making this decision.

#SNtrade. Going into Sunday nite, its sounding like #Rangers have backed out on the Nash sweepstakes. #Bluejackets demands remain too rich.
