Roman Polak to Leafs

Patrick said:
I imagine Gunnarsson was wanting 1st pairing money, that and his lack of physicality probably facilitated this, Polak can be a little nasty.

Gunnarsson may not have thrown big hits, but he was hardly lacking in physicality. He used it in a way that was actually positive defensively - preventing players from getting into the crease or getting to too many loose pucks in front of the crease, and just being plain old difficult to play against. That's the kind of physicality defencemen need. Big hits are way overrated.

They save about 750k apparently, plus some rumblings about Gunnarsson having a serious hip issue.

$400K - so, less then the league minimum. Gunnarsson did have significant hip surgery this offseason, though.

Real_ESPNLeBrun: Leafs retained $200,000 of cap hit in Polak-Gunnarsson deal

Ahh, Nonis, the gift that keeps on giving. To other teams.

I'm speechless. This move seems to keep getting worse and worse and worse.

So, with that, the cap savings work out to $200K for the next couple seasons - so, basically, nothing. Covert tank mode on? I mean, Polak's at least a good skater, but, he's bad with the puck and is basically a 3rd pairing guy. The only upgrade he has on Gunnarsson, really, is that he's a right handed shot (though, not a particularly accurate one) and that the fans will like that he's more likely to deliver a big hit.

Ya know Randy must have thought he was great when his Ducks played against him, slow and a terrible possession player.

He's actually not slow. He's a pretty decent skater. He's just really mediocre overall.

Obviously the plan is to get a new and improved Gunnarsson clone in the 7th round this year.  We did it once, it can be done again!!

So with Phaneuf being moved out next, and probably replaced with inferior talent as well, the light at the end of tunnel 'McDavid' shines a little brighter.

A Blues AGM interrupts. "Hey. Hey. Ask them to retain salary." "Are you crazy?" "No do it, watch. Just do it."

Made me laugh.

So, with this move, the Leafs only have 2 NHL regulars they drafted under contract - both of whom were drafted in the top 7. That's . . . yeah.

It has to be the hip, surely?

I don't buy that. He's been playing with a bum hip for a couple of seasons now. I think it's slowed him down a tad but he's still been an effective player.

Gardiner and D'Amigo will make that 4 3, but still that's gotta be the lowest in the NHL. And that's if D'Amigo cracks the roster.
