Round 1: Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Montreal Canadiens

If you can get Andersen back at a lower cost (probably unlikely) wouldn't he be rather easily the best option available to run i this split system?

The team would know more about his rehab than what we saw in less than 3 games worth of conditioning appearance but his last two years really just have me leaning toward move on with someone else.

If we are going to pay in the 3-4 million range I would rather take a run at Ulmark.  Honestly I wouldn't mind Bernier coming back.  He had a really solid year playing for an awful Detroit team.

His recent track record says no.

Yeah I mean he wouldn't be my first choice. It's more like if some of those other goalies sign elsewhere and he can't find another team to sign him at a price he wants then maybe we just pair up again for another season or two and see how it goes. And I wouldn't be surprised if that's how this situation unfolds.

I'd also say that while I've been one of the more vocal critics of Andersen over the last year and a half I also know goalies are pretty voodoo so it wouldn't stun me at all if he rebounds next season.

Wouldn't shock me either, though I'd say the odds are against it.

We really want Jonathan Bernier back?  Really?

I wonder if we were a little harder on Bernier than we should have been. He had seasons with a .922 Sv%, 0.912, and then 0.908. And that worst year came during the tank-for-Matthews season so there's really nothing he could have done there. His save percentages... career, since the trade, and in the past couple seasons are pretty similar to Andersen's. And he's coming off a particularly good season with a bad Detroit team. He's not the top starter the team thought he might be when we acquired him all those years ago but he's rebounded as a pretty solid 1B type guy.

Not saying he'd be super high on my list since he might someone who has trouble playing on a team with a crazy fan base, just think he's a little underrated is all.

Reimer started 7 less games, had 1 less win and 9 less losses...his GAA was 2.48 to Bern's 2.88 ad his Sv% was 918 to Bern's 908 so he wasn't that good.
Hard pass on Bernier.

After the Leafs got bounced by Washington I posted a thread about how the Andersen trade was a bad one and they probably should have stuck with Bernier.

Nice of you all to catch up.

I mean, certainly, I could see bringing him back just to give him a second crack at identifying Nelson Mandela.

The main reason though wasn't because Andersen wasn't capable, but I believe you mentioned we completely short circuited the rebuild by tossing out another pick, which had knock on effects in a way and we kept JVR/Bozak as own rentals.

Man, I was miffed that they let Bozak/JVR go for nothing but the fact that this is happening repeatedly and we have little to show for it since 2016 besides inflated contracts, especially when you need cheap, cost controlled talent... Oof. This is ungood.

Sure, it wasn't my main point and I'm being a little tongue-in-cheek here but I did also say that the difference between Andersen and Bernier wasn't as great as people were making it out to be.

He did kind of get left out to die on a god awful team.

I don't really agree that the clear #1 role is a dying breed in that I think most teams that win a cup do it on the backs of a clear number 1. I could be mistaken on that.

3 of the last 4 Cup winning teams didn't have what we would traditionally have considered a clear #1. They mostly had the 3/5 split I was suggesting, with a guy who was the 1A who carried the load once the playoffs got going, but less so during the regular season.

The only exception in the group was Tampa last season, but they also have one of the top 3 goalies in the league, which makes them somewhat of an outlier. If you get a guy of the calibre of Vasilevskiy, you can run him out almost every game. Teams that don't have that guy have been going more and more towards a split. Of the teams left in the playoffs this season, only Tampa and Colorado didn't have a split in the 60/40 range.

I've always considered that a matter of teams being smarter with their goalies. I think they've realized that you can't run your number 1 dog as hard in the regular season if you want to have success in the post season.

My recollection of Bernier was that he had a tendency to let in stoppable goals at inopportune times. Part of that is probably due to the terrible defensive play in front of him, but, nevertheless, it was a problem. I get the impression that, in a lower pressure role, he's improved some in that area.

He wouldn't be high on my list, but I wouldn't write him off, either.

There's some of that to it, as well. Either way, the traditional concept of a clear number 1 goalie is outdated.

There was this and it was too similar to Toskala's. Like this always seems to happen to us and never for us.
