Simmonds signed to a 2-year extension @ 900k AAV

Weren't there some hypothetical grumblings that Corey Perry was the alternative plan to Simmonds for the Leafs in the offseason.  Maybe I'm misremembering that but it would have been an interesting decision.  Also Tavares wouldn't have been injured in that alternative reality.

The rumour was Perry was the backup target if Simmonds signed elsewhere (specifically, Montreal, IIRC). Might have been the better move. Perry was a much stronger contributor.

You mean the Corey Perry who shows up massive for key games like the playoffs? That guy? Nah, we don't need that intensity in the playoffs.

I guess? But you look at his playoff history and it's pretty up and down.

That?s true, but it?s still better than Simmonds? playoff resume.

Sure if that's the criteria it's a legit point. But the idea that there are guys who just always bring it in the playoffs isn't really true beyond, like, superstars.

No real issues at that price point. You do still need vets and role players and "intangibles".

And speaking of intangibles I could see Simmonds having more of an impact next season with fans back in the arena, he's one of those guys who will do something to get people shouting a little louder and feed off that.

I agree with you.

Well dubas is doubling down on we can win with group, i thought last season Simmonds was risky but he had a lot of time to heal so maybe. He couldn?t even make it though a 56 game schedule

He broke his wrist blocking a shot. That's not a wear and tear injury related to age or stamina.

Wasn't even trying to block it. It was a clearing attempt from a teammate behind him. Freak accident.

I rewatched, it was a clearing attempt block on the forecheck.
I know that it was from a shot, but I still say he won?t make it though a 82 game season.

That's certainly a risk you run with any player, especially a player in his thirties who plays physical. But there's really not much in the way of evidence that suggests he can't stay healthy. He's actually been remarkably durable the last 5 years.

What is considered staying healthy really? 82 games? 78 games? 70 games? I mean, he's a fourth liner, he's not going to play all 82, sooooo....what would the original poster like to see?

For league minimum or (next to it), it's not a bad signing. He shouldn't get anything more than 4th line minutes but him and Spezza on the fourth line with a Brooks or someone of that ilk isn't a bad fourth line.

67 has absolutely nothing to do with this core but 6th season (and a movie) does.  I don't care how many healthy games any individual player provides us this year as long as they are ready to go come the playoffs and they aren't invisible when that time comes.

For what it's worth, I've always considered playing in 90% or more of your team's games(or 75+ in a regular season) to be a very healthy season. Under 70, so you're missing around 15% of your team's games, is where I tend to think of it as being sort of injury prone and below 65 is where I think your health can be seen as a real negative.

It's a silly notion or thought process to define a player like Simmonds value. I mean really, his replacement isn't going to matter. but Simmonds effect very well could in 1 or 2 minute spurts

Yes that makes sense. But is that equal across the board. I expect far more movement in the 3rd and 4th lines than I do in the 1st and 2nd lines.

Well, it's just related to health. 3rd and 4th liners will miss games for other reasons.
