So the debate begins: Matthews vs. Laine

I'm fine with the Leafs drafting Matthews but we are going to be seeing a ton of Laine highlights over the years.

As Leafs fans I feel like if no matter who gets drafted there will be some narrative (especially from other fanbases) about the other player that the Leafs didn't draft being better.

We're basically doomed to see a ton of highlights from whichever of the two the Leafs don't draft. On the bright side, we're also likely to witness a ton from the one they do.

Awesome shot, but for sure don't let the top scorer in the tournament walk the blue line and then walk into the slot without being challenged.

Even putting aside all the Matthews vs. Laine fun, I feel like we say that about half of the goals scored by guys like Stamkos and Ovechkin ("why was no one covering him???"). It feels like the best goal scorers just know how to get into open areas on the ice, and then they make sure they convert on that opportunity.

That's probably because as Leafs fans we're accustomed to things, at best, working out pretty good and not terrifically. If whoever the Leafs draft wins a couple of Harts or a Cup or two I'm guessing we wouldn't.

Team USA starts a bunch of NHL plugs to start the third period PP.

They do nothing, Matthews then gets 20 seconds of the PP and has a great scoring chance only to be robbed by the goalie.

The kid makes things happen, seems like he has found an extra gear here in the elimination game.

That's probably true but I don't get the sense Matthews is as flashy or as much of a goal scorer as Laine. I'd probably rather have Toews than Tarasenko but you don't see a ton of Toews highlights.

There's another downside to this too. Winnipeg fans are obnoxious enough when they're inventing rivalries out of thin air. Now they'll have a semi-legitimate storyline to work with here.

Man, has a fanbase ever burned through goodwill like Winnipeg has? Remember when we were all happy to have the Jets back?

TRUE NORTH

I think Winnipeg is my 2nd most disliked franchise, only behind Vancouver who seem to have this smug nature about a team that has never won a championship.  Yes, 1967, we get it.  How about 1960-never?

I still think Ottawa's "Hey, we have the same name as a franchise that won a cup 80 years ago so those count, right" is the worst of it but yeah.

USA-CZE are in OT right now.

The Czech's were 1st in Group A and went 5-1-1-0 in the preliminary round (that's W-OTW-OTL-L). So even taking them to OT in an elimination game is pretty impressive for the US.

That said, am I the only one who really just wants to see Matthews' tournament end quickly and without an injury?

Time for shootout and for Matthews to literally become Toews.

3 goals or bust.
