Bozak, Kadri, Bolland, and... who? McClement? I recall some, at the time Colborne was traded, noting that there were 4 NHL centers on the roster, none in the press box, and no one that could be called up from the minors. You shouldn't need that house of cards to collapse before figuring out shipping out your other center makes acquiring a new one 'necessary.'

Trevor Smith was with the team so they had a fairly serviceable replacement for short term things. Not many teams keep a perfectly legitimate 5th NHL centre on the club just in case of injury.

Several teams put natural centers on the wing so they can slide someone competent over when injuries hit. If you want to believe it was sensible management and bad luck that had JvR practicing his face-offs in the hallway between periods, feel free.

That's where I'd get back to saying that Nonis should be rightfully dinged on the Colborne decision but that even if Colborne had stuck around I think the Holland deal would be a pretty defensible one.

I genuinely don't know how to make my feelings on the decision to trade Colborne clearer.

IIRC, Carlyle chose his roster and Colborne didn't make the cut.  Nonis had to trade Colborne or risk losing him to waivers UNLESS he went down to Carlyle and FORCED him to change his lineup.  Its not something GM's typically do alot of.  To put all of the decision on Nonis' shoulders isn't right.  Carlyle contributed to it as well, keeping McLaren, Orr, and Ashton ahead of him. (argh)

In most cases the coach works with the roster that the GM chooses. Not the other way around.

I have to think that in most cases, when the issue is 4th liners/press box guys, at the very least most GM's will make a collaborative decision with the coach.

Is it same to assume this draft lottery is going to be the most watched since it's been televised?  Half of Toronto is going to tune in hoping to see the Leafs win the right to bring the Golden Child home.

This is the first lottery that I am interested in since the Crosby lottery.

Am I right to assume that this is the first time in the lottery era (other than the Crosby one) that the Leafs actually have a shot at first overall?

What date is the lottery supposed to take place?

I read a tweet that said it would likely be April 18th but it wasn't confirmed.

I believe they had a shot at #1 in 2012 when they drafted 5th.

Hmmm...Why don't I remember the "hoopla" at that time for first overall?

That was the Yakupov draft, so the excitement level was a little different compared to McDavid obviously. I know some of us, myself included, wanted Galchenyuk that year and thought that there was a (slim) chance he'd be available at 5 anyway.

That seems late. The season ends on Saturday the 11th. If this year follows last year, the draft lottery will be on the following Tuesday the 14th and the playoffs will begin on Wednesday the 15th.

The tweet I read said that the  NHL was aiming for the first Saturday of the playoffs.

I looked back to 2009, all the lottery's were held on a Monday or Tuesday. Obviously I can understand why the NHL would want to give this particular one more of a spotlight. All the previous drafts were also held by TSN, and I'm assuming Sportsnet is going to get this one so it will also be the first one to be held by a broadcaster who has games on Saturday's.

And it's a brand new lottery as well.

Ok. Thanks.  Just put a 'D' in that date on my iPhone calender. The D is for Dont watch. It could also stand for Dissapointment. Of course if they win It'll stand for McDavid.
