The Brian Burke Thread

I am more disappointed with the fact that he did nothing at the trade deadline regardless of position. He says that he could have made multiple trades and potentially could have had at least 4 first round picks. Also says that he flat out turned down an offer for Reimer. Hopefully he will do something at the draft, until then I am expecting more losses.

Your team just lost 10 straight games in clutch time in year 4 of the 5 year retool? What do you do?

Well, I just up and started investing the lion's share of my time in another hockey team.

Is it sacrilege to suggest that Burke himself ought to be fired at the end of the season if this collapse continues?

I would have to think about that a lot more before coming up with a serious answer rather than a frustration-driven rant.  But I think it's a valid question to consider.  And that, in itself, says a lot.

If we don't make the playoffs next year then I think the board should consider it... That is if he doesn't leave first on his own accord.

Then the new GM comes in, trades away most of the young prospects Burke has assembled to acquire middling-to-above-average NHLers and we're back to square one.

I think you give Burke the length of his contract. His biggest flaw right now is his refusal to remove the coach, which to be honest, is only something I've started to believe should be done recently.

He probably should have done (almost) anything it took to secure a decent goalie at the deadline, but if the price was too high, what can you do? Ditto with elite forwards. Do people think other GMs are just dying to trade superstars to Burke's Leafs so they can all hear his bluster during the ensuing press conference?

In a way, his grand entrance as the Toronto GM may have been ill-advised, like he was guaranteeing he was going to turn the team around in no time and the whole 'my team is this, this and that...' It's similar also to when he proclaimed he was going after the Isles first-overall pick in the Tavares draft. That's just setting yourself up to fail and the other GMs must have a good chuckle at Burke sometimes.

That's far from a foregone conclusion.

It is if Burke is canned because he refused to do the same thing.

Sacrilege? No, but I don't think it's very realistic.

Burke trumpeted how great the Leafs record was from Jan 2011-Dec 2011. Problem is that does nothing for us. Look at the record for this season Burkie, we're probably behind last year's pace now.  What a bloody disaster.
