Good interview with Dave Poulin on what the Leafs have been doing and some insight into their pro scouting

So Burke doesn't do everything on his own?? When a player gets drafted/signed there's consensus in the room? Whaaaaa?

Is that ultimately a meaningful distinction if Burke is ultimately responsible for deciding who's in the room?

Brian Burke Interview ? SportsnetFan590 with Bob McCown

I like the tiny dig Burke takes at Connolly.

I thought Grabo, Kule & Semin would be an interesting line, but not if he wants a contract longer than 3 years. He could just be another bust for us. But he could put up solid number as well. I am certain that Burke will fill out the roster with some trades though.

I am wondering why burke wont make an offer to Semen. this guy would be a great addition to our top six.

Nutman wants Semen? Maybe its the psych in me but i think theres an underlying message here......

It's nice to hear that he says it isn't even a remote possibility that the current roster will be the one that starts the season.

What exactly are you trying to imply with this post?

I think you need to clean up the talk.

It's nice to hear yeah, but that's going to blow up in his face big-time if he isn't able to make big changes and the team struggles out the gate.

It also doesn't mean anything. How many times have we heard Burke saying that he wants to improve the team at the deadline or the draft only to have him say "We explored avenues but they proved to be too expensive" or something when nothing gets done?

The players still available aren't of much use to the Leafs who need help at centre, in net, veteran leadership and still have a suspect defensive group.  There are some players who want a lengthy contract that still do not make any sense and burden the team and make it difficult for the player to go elsewhere.  Then there are players who will not want to play in Toronto - could be family considerations, or the fact is the Leafs are no where close to being a playoff contender.

As for trades, the only ones that can offer something good in return are the key players (Kessel, Lupul, Grabovski etc.) or the prospects (Kadri etc.).  It doesn't make sense to trade away any of the key players away, nor does it make sense to trade away the prospects, considering only a few years ago, the Marlies had very little depth that could help the Leafs out.

Leafs announce addition of Steve Staios as Player Development Advisor.

Wasn't really sure about starting a new thread for that, but it's news...

Based on his team's win/loss record and the fact that he was hired by the outgoing ownership group I'm guardedly optimistic that Brian Burke will soon be given the opportunity to take his considerable talents elsewhere.

Some quotations of interest...(from the above article)...

?Winning teams increase viewership. That?s what drives their bottom line.?

?Under the Teachers? pension plan, this was an investment to generate resources to pay their pension,? said O?Reilly. ?Now you have a syndicate of owners all that have vested interest in the teams being more successful.?

?I don?t know if it?s realistic for the Raptors to make the playoffs, but their performance is going to have to improve,? said Powers. ?The deal bought Burke another year. If they (the Leafs) don?t make the playoffs this year, you know his head?s going to go.?

Powers believes the new board of MLSE, which will feature representatives from Rogers and Bell replacing those who represented the pension fund, will focus the organization on winning.

?This is all about content,? said Powers. ?Winning content is better than losing content.?

No surprise that both Bell and Rogers will come in and will want their respective teams to facilitate a winning formula for success.  Different owners, different attitude, indeed.

Really? Rogers has actually shown the opposite in regards to the Jays. Both companies are profit oriented and not necessarily driven by quality (unless quality means the maximizing of profits).

But I don't get the knock on the Teachers Pension Fund. They spent to max in terms of cap, management team, coaching and GM so if they were only concerned about their investment, wouldn't they have cheaped out on some/all of those things?
